Review:
After Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty games become repetitive, recycled, old and boring. Though it can be fun to do with friends every once in a while, the most recent CoD games were just unimpressive, especially the single player.
So because of that, I rented Black Ops 2 with mixed expectations. Watching the trailer it did seem like this Call of Duty game might finally be "new". At the same time it was Call of Duty.
So I rented Black Ops 2 with my friends and we tried it out...
My first impression after going into a bit of this:
"Holy crap... the story feels... fresh?! The levels aren't completely repetitive and in fact... I'm enjoying this!"
Yes guys, this might just be my opinion, but I said it; the campaign for BlOps2 has a new story and it's actually pretty good. It's a bit generic and there are better narratives in gaming, but it's still enjoyable and "fresh".
1. The campaign levels have really changed and instead of your generic "Oh no! You just blacked out and now you have to make your way out with explosions everywhere while you break into a lot of rooms shooting in slow motion", there's far more content in these levels and due to the graphics improving significantly, levels don't feel clutter and ugly looking. Notice, however, that I said it the campaign doesn't feel "completely repetitive". There's still a couple of levels where it can get repetitive but it shouldn't take away too much from the experience.
Also, you get to choose how your story unfolds and the choices you make can impact the story which is pretty neat. (BTW, the write of the recent Batman movies wrote the script for this game)
2. Now unto the graphics, which I mentioned a little earlier while I was talking about the campaign. Yes, the graphics are SO much better then the previous 3 games. I thought the colors in MW and Black Ops were bland (actually really bland in the MW3), a bit too grainy and... well... just ugly. Not in Black Ops 2. The graphics are colorful, and not so grainy and buggy as the past games. Don't except the graphics to be gorgeous, but they are pretty good and it makes playing this game so much more fun.
3. Strike Force Missions. Now I didn't do TOO much of this to really give a full review, but in my opinion, I really enjoyed them. Though I have to admit... the AIs that are suppose to "help" you beat the missions can sometimes be downright stupid. They go in the wrong direction and sometimes you wonder "are they even shooting anything?" But anyway, it is pretty fun taking control of vehicles and fighting your way through enemies.
4. Multiplayer. Classes were so much more unique and interesting in this game. While classes always felt the same in the other CoD games, I felt like picking out my own classes in this game were a lot more unique and interesting.
Also, unlike Battlefield 3 and Halo 4, believe it or not, BlOps 2 has probably been one of the most balanced FPS games this year and out of any of the recent CoD games.
I really liked League Matchmaking System in this game that put you against people on your skill level, getting rid of the skill gap.
Maps were equally balanced, less cluttered and there were a lot less areas where people could just camp.
Although classes and maps are a lot better, I still felt like they could have done so much more with multi-player. It just felt too familiar.
5. Finally, Zombies!!! The main reason why a lot of people buy this game. Yes, they gave Zombies its own little story and there were new maps and such, but it felt like the first Black Ops zombies but in different locations. Also... I thought that the first BlOps Zombies were more eventful, but hey, maybe that's just me. Maybe you will like this Zombies even more, but I've met a lot of people who share the same opinion as me that Zombies felt the same and a lot more could have been to improve it.
Final Verdict:
Alright Flood, let's quickly go over the Pros and Cons of Black Ops 2 in a nutshell:
Pros
- New, fresh story with more content and less repetitive objects made the campaign my favorite part of the game.
- I liked how you could get to unfold the story in different ways with the choices you make
- Graphics have significantly improved and are colorful unless like the other CoD games where they were bland, grainy and ugly
- Strike Force Missions was pretty fun and something you'll enjoy a lot more then Spec Ops
- Improved, more balanced and more unique classes were a plus for the game
- Maps are more balanced, less cluttered and camping didn't happen so frequently as the past CoD games.
- Matchmaking system gets rid of huge skill gaps, unlike games like Halo 4
Cons:
- Multiplayer could have been improved a lot more. It just felt too familiar
- Zombies also could have been improved a lot more. This was probably the most disappointing factor for me.
All in all, Black Ops 2 was a pretty good game. If you're looking to play something new, Flood, you might not enjoy Multiplayer (even with it's improved classes and maps) and you probably won't enjoy Zombies either. However, I can guarantee for the majority of you, that you will enjoy the campaign, the story and the Strike Force Missions.
But as for me, I'd give this game:
8/10
