How much did you spend on your first guitar? Acoustic or electric? Is an electric guitar too loud for casual play in a dorm?

I used to play Guitar Hero.

I could never beat it on easy.

I paid very little. Like, $100 or something for a Squier for my first.

No, electric guitars aren't too loud for a dorm. You can get an amp and adjust the volume accordingly. If you don't use an amp then it obviously won't be very loud at all.

I spent $200 on my Fender jaguar, not adding with my amp which was $90, but an acoustic is not loud for a dorm but for an electric, set to to a pretty low volume enough for you to hear it through the amp and not through the halls it could be fine.

I only learned to play for chicks, and really only after I moved to the United States did it work

Guitars are cheap. I bought mine for under 200, including small amp. My brother just ordered an Epiphone online for 170.

You can play in the dorms and its not that loud. You can also get headphones.

I'm not so good with advice...Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

I got my first acoustic for christmas. Spent $350 on an electric which i use in my dorm, just without the amp. Works fine.

Can't remember, but I have no idea why I even bothered getting it and am now enjoying my $1200 Ibanez S5400 or some crap and it is infinitely better than any cheap guitar.

I suppose you need a cheap guitar at first in case you don't even stick with guitar, but once the years pass by and you're still playing you wonder why you bothered.

There was one at guitar center right by me for $80, I believe it was a Epiphone.

I had an old Aria Classical guitar I learned on, it was my parents so it was free.

My first electric was an Ibanez Gio, I think they run like $120. They suck, but for a starter guitar it's fine.

Ain't that the truth. I ended up going through like 2 epiphones and a cheap RG ibanez before I found the light...same for amps lol.

I'm actually in the process of building a telecaster right now. Investing a good amount of time and money into that.

About $100 for an electric Squier Strat. I'd recommend starting with acoustic if you want to be well-rounded, but grab a low-end Ibanez RG if you're just wanting to play metal or hard rock.

And while even practice amps can get fairly loud, you'll be fine playing at a lower volume. I'd recommend a Line 6 Spider III/IV for a good practice amp. The effects are overly digital-sounding, but they are excellent for the price range, and it's better than getting a low-end Marshall and having to buy more effects.

If you can't trust yourself, then don't trust anyone.

My first guitar was a Greg Bennett Malibu black guitar. It was 110$ I think. I hated it. Glad I got a Dean Dixie Rebel afterwards. Expensive, but brutal guitar.

I'm also looking for a cheap guitar. I'd love to learn how to play some T-Swift / other country songs just as a hobby.

God tier: Just a Kiss by Lady A. Such a good band

Lady A, Eli Young Band, T Swift, Jake Owen, Zac Brown Band, Band Perry just came out with a new song I really like (link related), Miranda Lambert, Thompson Square, Chris Young, and Easton Corbin all have songs I'd love to play.

Don't litter, or God will rip your face off and feed it to a goat.

I started with an Ibanez RG120. About 200-225 bucks. Totally worth it. And if you keep the volume low on your amp, it wont be too loud for a dorm.

  • 12.18.2012 7:57 PM PDT

350 on a ibanez rg, like the others suggested a cheap one but still good.

my second one cost me around 600, down from 850 i believe, this sweet thing

Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

My first guitar was $200. No need for anything fancy for your first guitar, and a clean electric is fine in most situations. You don't always need to be plugged in. It also depends on the type of music you like to play, and which feels better for you.
For example, I've played both acoustic and electic guitars, and electric guitars just feel so much better to me. One of my friends swears by his acoustic.

OP!

Do not fall for a low end guitar!

Either get a POS or a decent guitar (low mid end) get a used guitar for around 400 with case, or maybe a little cheaper but do not waste cash on a new low end guitar.

Remember, if you buy used you can sell used and break even!
