Subject: A proposal for the American K-12 school system

There are 365 days in a year, or 52 weeks in a year.
In the American school system, students spend 180 days a year in school, or 36 weeks.

With a 5 day schoolweek, that's 36 weeks of school, coupled with 16 weeks of time off. Normally, students have the months of June, July, and August off. That's about 12 weeks of time off, and the other 4 weeks are spaced throughout the year.

Having 12 straight weeks of time off presents problems. Students often forget much of the material they have learned during this time. It's very counterproductive.

Simple proposal; what if the time is split up more evenly throughout the year? Let's keep the current system of 36 weeks of school, and 16 weeks of time off. You could try something like
- 1 week off every month, plus 4 extra weeks for other holidays.
or
- June and December off, and 1 week off roughly every 5 weeks.
or
any other variation you can suggest

The Flood is mostly made of students, so what do you guys think of this?

I think schools would cut down costs if they went from 5 7 hour days to 4 8.5 hour days.
Yes the day would be longer, but you'd get a 3 day weekend and lower bills for the schools.

I would forget what they taught me after a week of not doing work. After small breaks, I still forget some material. June off, well I mean you'll then again forget the material. Your point is trying to stop us from forgetting material, sadly it doesn't do that. At least not for me.

I don't see you doing anything to help our country.
Except sitting at home, naked, eating twinkies, rubbing your hands together going "Heh. Target Destroyed. Mission Accomplished." Oh wait. that's not helping.

No, that sounds like I would hate it. I enjoy my long break as it gives me time to get non school related things accomplished.

I kind of like the idea of a whole week off every month, but I still like my 3 months long break. I'm in college though so it doesn't matter.

Please do not send me group invites.

Actually, some schools in my district do that [called "year-round"].

They have shorter breaks, but more frequent ones.

Really?

A lot of other students I talk to complain of being bored about 6 weeks into summer break.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Isn't that a revisioned quarter system?

ish

More frequent breaks, but the breaks are smaller.

Hell, you could have 4 quarters, each 2 months long, and just have 5 weeks off at the end of each one.

But the question is, should the year-round system be more widely implemented?

well, I've on both, and I prefer the quarter system over the semester. There are many advantages. You get more frequent breaks, quarter is the perfect amount of time for a subject, and the breaks aren't too long.

At least for college and high school classes.

What about the little ones? kindergarteners and such?

We do it over here. Every ten weeks we have two week holidays, then a six week holiday for summer.
Only adds up to 12 weeks and I'm jelly of you murrican's, but it works.

Where is "over here?"

  • 12.18.2012 10:59 PM PDT

I live in the U.S. and this current school year for K-12 is 35 weeks(in my district at least). Let me tell you this, I go to school for a week straight(5 days), that weekend I forget everything I was "taught" and I have forgotten literally everything next Monday.

It's not just the 3 months off(I don't even get 3 months off anymore, I get 2 months and there are longer breaks for Holidays) as most of us here do forget what was "taught" in a matter of days.

Right now, I'm self teaching myself computer hardware and software and I just go to school and skate by with the bare minimum, school doesn't interest me in the least and if anything, I would go to a trade school after High School(or College for you UK/Europeans), but I doubt I would need that.

Nothing in school is interesting to me, that's probably why I forget 99% of the material in the classroom.

Depends on the school. Private schools generally have more holidays. At least in QLD they do.

Yeah, I went to a private school in Queensland and we always got a week or two over the public school kids. More pupil-free days too.

"Before you insult someone, try walking a mile in their shoes. This way, when you insult them, you are a mile away and have their shoes."

As much as I slightly agree, I cannot really judge. You see, I need the summer break, as my family lives 18 hours away. It's a perk of being an international student that a long break is needed to travel to close ones.

I've got a fan!

I take summer classes so I only get a couple weeks of break anyways. I do not like the idea of year-round schedules for college because of the importance of internships, summer classes or jobs, and generally just needing a period of time to focus on non-school issues and being able to relieve stress.

For high school it would be fine I suppose, but I fail to see how adding frequent breaks as opposed to one long one helps make the lessons more consistent.
