Subject: Insanity, Philosophical Discussion.

Some time ago I had an idea that basically normal humans are basically balanced people in that all psychological disease are balanced, i.e. a lot of people talk to themselves occasionally but yet they are not schizophrenic or that people like some attention to themselves but yet they are not narcissistic.

So Flood, any objections, thoughts, or additions?

Please do elaborate!

Mental/behavioral disorders are clinically diagnosed chemical imbalances and have physical evidence manifesting in various ways.

I'm not really sure what you're saying but no, it is not normal to have a mental disorder.

It's not really a philosophical discussion. It's actually a scientific one - one of psychology to be exact.

You are absolutely right. Healthy individuals may exhibit one or two symptoms of a mental illness but not to the extent which the DSM IV would diagnose them.

The two most commonly confused illnesses are OCD and narcissism. Whenever a person says, "Gosh! I'm so OCD! I just put the smaller book on top of the bigger book because it totally bugs me!" it's annoying because that doesn't mean you have OCD.

Same with narcissism. There is such a thing as healthy narcissism. It's crucial that we as humans like ourselves as it is a fundamental part of mental health. It's all about striking that middle ground.

I have an associates in psychology. It won't get me anywhere because you need a masters or higher but it's a culmination of classes I picked up along the way. I find the field to be amazingly interesting.

The one issue I have with it are classmates who look at the criteria for a mental illness, realize they have one or two of the symptoms and then panic because they are assuming they have the illness. This is quite common, actually, but still.

I'd say mental illness is perhaps one of the least understood things in our society and it's a shame that is the case. According to one study (sorry, I can't remember which) 47% of people asked would not even befriend someone with a mental illness. That's insanity in my mind as most people with mental illness are able to function normally they just need assistance in one area.

It's like saying I won't be your friend because you have a broken arm, basically.

Yeah, sorry for the long post but I love psychology.

Then where do we draw the line between 'normal' and mental disorder?

Like having stress or an emotional break down because of a certain event in your life could impose the chemical imbalance.

I believe OP is saying that people who talk to themselves aren't "insane", but that is what some people do that are technically clinically insane.

Sometimes I do talk to myself, but I am in no way shape or form "insane" nor have any sort of a mental disorder.

I think he saying that "normal" human beings can have the same actions that are considered "only an insane person does" without being insane.

I am saying that normal people have balance in their bodies. Mental disease is not normal.

This.

The DSM V is due to come out in 2013.

Have I ever told you the definition of Insanity?
I checked the definition of insanity on webster.com and it kind of goes with mental disease.

Einstein was a smart guy and all, but his definition of insanity is just a smidge wrong, and now everybody and their mother is using it.

What was the definition? Is it doing the same thing and expecting different results? I go on the Flood a lot and expect different things yet am I insane?

"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" or some nonsense like that. It doesn't even make sense.

Why?

Because:

a) That isn't the definition of insanity; it has nothing to do with insanity. Maybe stupidity? But not even that, because:

b) We do the same thing every day expecting different results. I study the same lectures over and over expecting to gradually learn it better. I run M/W/F and expect to improve. I flip a coin and expect it to not land on heads every time.

It's just such an irrelevant quote.

As a narcissist I'm offended by this "disorder" label. Maybe you're the one with the disorder for not realizing just how awesome I am.
