The title of this thread gave me a good laugh.

Does anyone have a link to the published study referenced in the OP?

Since you asked so nicely, I worked my Google magic.
Thanks.

This is all I needed:
In the past 2 decades, correlational and experimental studies have found a positive association between violent video game play and aggression

CORRELATION.

Not causation.

Just going to leave this here. Again.

5 reasons video game studies are BS

Definitely worth the read.

  • 12.19.2012 5:36 PM PDT

I'd agree with that. I'm pretty desensitized to violence.

  • 12.19.2012 5:36 PM PDT

Really? Something that is not for kids will have ill effects?

Next you're going to tell me that cigarettes kill babies.

I'm not even going to blame OP on this one. I don't know how credible The Telegraph is, but their title of the article entirely misrepresents the study they're talking about.

The title: "Violent video games make teenagers more aggressive, study finds"

The study: "In the past 2 decades, correlational and experimental studies have found a positive association between violent video game play and aggression"

Different things.

To bad you can't use that logic when it comes to your own biased claims.

Implying that these "studies"weren't biased in the first place.

>Conducted on children not teens

Take your pick

A biased study. It's just a coincidence that they found a correlation between the two.

Look, these researchers don't even play games and just jump to conclusions to make money, its bullcrap.

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

Well, to be fair, the article/research concludes that there is an association. An association is a slightly stronger relationship than a correlation. An association simply states that there is a relationship between the two variable, even if we don't know exactly what it is. Using the word "make" is perhaps a bit sensationalistic. But most online news sources are guilty of doing similar things.

The study goes on:
"[...]There is less evidence, however, to support a long-term relation between these behaviors"

Someone needs to do their homework.

Boltshot = mini shotgun

Don't fall for arguing with Rose everyone.
OT: I'll trust hundreds of database articles that say video games don't cause aggression rather than this "study" saying they do.

Troll + Drama Queen = Rose
Fix'd
Thanx

^This.

OT: I'd be interested to know what video games they used in this experiment. Halo? COD? GTA? Mass Effect? You'd think that there'd be some difference or some attribution to note based on the game they're playing.

Also, we're dealing with VIOLENT video games here, not Super Mario Bros or Forza Motorsport. Even games like Skyrim would be exempt from this study.

Why would we deal with non violent games in this study in the first place?

No reason. But your thread title says "Video games make kids more aggressive", while the study you linked specifically refers to them as "violent video games". I was pointing out that the thread was mis-titled, as it should say "VIOLENT Video games make kids more aggressive" to avoid a massive generalisation.

Just sayin'.

Now sit down and pull your pants back up.

NO THEY DON'T!!! -blam!- YOU! -blam!- YOUR STUDY! -blam!- SOCIETY! I can play all the Halo Duty Creed 13 I want and it DOES NOTHING TO ME! -blam!- YOU!

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

Really, OP, because I've had quite a few criminal psychologists tell me otherwise.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

The teenagers were asked a series of questions such as how often they pushed or shoved people and whether they frequently kicked or punched people who made them angry.
I'm left wondering how accurate this method of data gathering would be.

I'm not going to completely disregard it, but I think more studies than one need to be done.

No, it's pretty obvious that competitive games (and I do say games, not videogames) can put someone into a really aggressive and irritable state if the person doesn't realize the game is getting to them, i.e., the person forgets that the game is in fact just a toy and/or activity. Same thing happens with sport players and watchers. It's an issue with the person, though, not the game.
