The mayans predicted nothing, and it was a misconception

The Mayans have knowledge of the stars that you couldn't even begin to comprehend. They could essentially determine the future because of their understanding of astronomy.
Please, go on...

Explain how their understanding of astronomy [before telescopes, even] could lead them to conclude the date on which the world ends.

I encourage you to do your own research and find out the truth on your own initiative. But when you come back don't be surprised if I say "I told you so"

No no. I want you to cite the specific evidence that leads you to your conclusion.

So a bunch of ancient people, who couldn't even invent the wheel, are smarter than NASA?

Also, they've found other calendars that go past 2012, or end before it.

What? What makes you think they didn't have wheels? They were here when the Spaniards came. It's not like they were from 100,000 BC.
There's no archaeological evidence of wheels or wheel-like objects. No wood ones, no stone ones, none.

Did you know that the Egyptians didn't have wheels either? "Oh, but the Egyptians made pyramids!" Well yeah, but none of their records show wheels or wheel-like objects, and nothing in the archaeological record suggests this otherwise.

In fact, it appears that they transported all the giant blocks of stones on logs.

The Mayans were long gone before the Spaniards came. The Aztecs and Incas however were still around.

Last I remember hearing, they didn't learn how to make wheels. If you show me otherwise oh well, some old teacher was wrong.

The Mayans and Egyptians were great astronomers, no doubt, but crediting them ahead of NASA and other accredited astronomy agencies is absurd. Our modern technology and understanding allow us more insight than ever. Both the Mayans and Egyptians, however, had beautiful cultures and believed in beginnings and endings, but neither could be properly forecasted, only contemplated.

Incorrect, the Mayans foresaw the end of days and pinpointed the apocalypse to occur on one exact date: December 21st, 2012.

Show me where they predicted this exact date. They have calendars that go past tomorrow.

They were not.

The Spaniards conquered the Aztecs and the Incas.

The Mayans got up and left long before then for reasons nobody knows. They probably just had a drought or some poor series of events.

Yes, their whereabouts are unknown. Here's why:

As soon as they realized the apocalypse was very much a real threat to their descendants, they decided to abolish their civilization.

Incorrect. That date is simply the end of their 13th cycle and the beginning of the 14th. It is celebrated in Mayan culture. Media outlets have caused fear for that date, not the Mayans. Beginnings and endings.

Because disbanding and running around in the mud will stop the end of the world? I can tell they were quite intelligent.

Also, they aren't unknown. We know where descendants of the Mayans live, and they don't even believe the world will end Dec. 21, 2012.

I'm pretty sure the Mayans said that it was just a beginning of a new calender. Where are people getting this end of the world story anyway?

It's an astronomical thing. Also, have you noticed what's been going on the entire year? It's going to climax.

Please, share with the rest of the class.

The mass earthquakes, hurricanes, thousands of animals randomly dying, rise in solar flare activity, etc.
How exactly do you think the world will end, then?

But it says they were there until the Spanish came on Wikipedia. Not that I actually used that for information, but I could have sworn they were there for a while and the Incas and Aztecs just got the worst of it.

Actually, I think Midnight is right. Check this out: Quite interesting-especially around 1519.

We've had lots of Thames Valley officers in our town recently, and the local officers have been stepping up their patrols. I'd say it's to stop some of the anti-social behaviour that may occur tomorrow.
