I prefer Halo 4's gameplay at its absolute core over 3 & Reach (didn't play enough H2 to comment anecdotally, although I do understand the mechanics etc), but I simply can't stand to play any of the matchmaking playlists.
There's just too much random clutter over the top of an otherwise good game. Randomly timed weapon drops? Random personal ordnance? Unbalanced/bugged loadout options (hello there, Camo glitch)? Massively random Dominion resupplies?
All of that isn't an inherent problem with the game, though, as it can easily be fixed with the forge & custom options given. Although I will comment that the lack of a micro-adjustment forge feature (overlooked by Certain Affinity; they do want to TU it in thankfully) and a litany of custom options which don't actually work (disabling Flag carrier/last stand waypoints etc) the game can still provide a deal of frustration.
Ultimately once the randomness is stripped and I'm playing something much closer to what I feel the natural evolution of Halo should have been, it's a great game which finally has a powerful sandbox again. Put all the crap on top of it and I want little to do with it.
And that's why I've gone through an entire specialisation just from time spent forging & playing custom games. I want to play Halo 4, not "Halo" 4, and I'm doing what I can to make that a reality for myself.
EDIT: Just to make a few things clearer - I don't think there's been an undeniably "good" Halo game since CE, and even that had some flaws (mostly physics based). I dislike that each Halo game has been significantly different to its predecessor. There was no need to re-invent the wheel each time when the wheel only needed a little bit of improvement in the first place. What we've ended up with is a series of different wheels, all bumpier in different places. Overall it's just disappointing that the series has been anything but consistent.
