lazy linky

An ex-Marine has chosen to put on his old uniform, and stand guard outside of the local school. He does so for the sake of the parents, giving them hope and peace of mind. He's not being paid a single cent to do this either. What's your opinion on this flood?

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

Good on him.

Not armed.

Silly to think a crazy gunman wouldn't think twice about shooting a soldier on his way in to shoot six year olds.

One early warning means everything, I suppose.

I understand that what I'm about to say might rustle some jimmies, but..It's possible this guy is just doing it for the media attention.

Logically I don't think he could really think that he's making a difference just by being there.

Do not invite me to your private group. I will not join.

Its a common known fact that when a shooting like this recent one happens. A few more will follow in a attempt to better (worse from are perspective)

People are right to feel unsafe for the next week or so. It not safe.

He really isn't. At most he's just going to stop some person with a baseball bat or knife. If you have someone that has a gun and is planing on shooting the school up. Like you said he's not going to make a difference. Really the main thing he's going to do. Is be the person that gets shot which alerts the school.

He's not there to stop a gunman, obviously. He's there to give the parents a peace of mind, with them worrying about another shooting it's comforting for them to him there. Even if he's unarmed and can't do anything, although I'm sure if someone tried something he'd do everything he could, but for the most part it's to comfort the other parents and kids. Like saying, "You don't need to worry there's a Marine outside who'll keep everyone all safe." Will he actually? Not necessarily, but like I said, it's a matter of comforting the parents/kids.

I would think that it would be more comforting to the children who are old enough to really understand what happened and be afraid. If I was a parent I wouldn't really be comforted considering what I said before that it wouldn't really make a difference.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

He is not going to keep anyone safe, do you think if someone wanted to shoot people, they would care who or what was there? no .

The sad fact is sometimes there is no way to prevent these disasters from happening.

Also he is an ex-marine and has no real authority

Instead of thinking he's silly due to the fact that he can't really protect anyone...

I realize that he's really there for others to give some sort of comfort. I see no problem with this.

Good for him.

Obviously but an "authority" figures presence won't prevent a disaster. But, I suppose it is good people want to protect and watch schools closely because you never know if another crazy might be inspired by Lanza and the media portraying him as some kind of anti hero.

The gunman wouldn't know hes not armed, it's a powerful psychological effect on the gunman.

Plus the marine might be able to notice a strange person and prevent it before it starts.

You'd be surprised by how many kids are in awe of a person in uniform. They're like a super hero to them. I'm sure the parents aren't naive and know that he isn't much of protection but I bet the kids think it's cool and since the shooting, parents are talking more about things like that tragedy, to their children. Give the kids comfort. It doesn't hurt.
