You know what? If they're trying to ransom him out then we should go in there, and shoot anyone who gets in our way of retrieving him. The fact that the US is doing nothing for someone who served is even worse.

exactly, you cant tell me that the pres cant ask for him to be released let alone make a press conference about it?

and you don't think that its worth to fight for what is right?
And the right thing to do is to bust someone out from jail after breaking the law because he fought in some war? Even as your own law system says that everyone is equal to the law. You want other countries to make exceptions to the law because the law was broken by an American? Sure, you got an extradition treaty with Mexico, but really those only seem to work one way with the USA for the most part so not leading by good example really showing that you can give a flat out NO when someone ask the USA to hand out a criminal. Annika Östberg had to stay in an American prison for 28 years before they sent her back, despite the treaty. Mexico should be in their full right to keep and American prisoner who has broken the Mexican law.

What you are talking about is not what is right.

im not saying start a war with mexico or blow a hole in the prison but you cant tell me that the pres. of the U.S. cant talk to the mexican gov. to negotiate to get him out when we've sent a former president over to North Korea to save a bunch of U.S. reporters who broke North Korean law

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

I like how just because he is American only a couple of people have advocated his release. I'm sure you would all be throwing a fit if he was Canadian or something.

I'm Canadian, and I hope he gets released before Christmas. It has nothing to do with nationality to me.

I doubt he was immigrating anywhere.

Nah, he was committing a very small crime.
And being held on ransom, fitting. (sarcasm)

Regardless, it isn't as big as our media is making it out to be.
"Mexico has stringent weapon laws, and enforces them strictly. As a result, several U.S. citizens are arrested each year under similar circumstances as Jon. When U.S. citizens are arrested overseas, a consular staff from the U.S. Embassy or closest U.S. consulate will visit them, provide a list of local attorneys, and monitor the progress of their case. Jon's case is proceeding through the Mexican justice system. He was initially represented by a public defender but now has private legal representation." ~ Citizens Services Specialist, Office of American Citizens Services at the United States Department of State [in a letter to Mrs. Hammar, Jon's mother.]

The US Consulate General in Mexico learned of his imprisonment August 26th, 2012 and visited him that same day. Since then, Mexican authorities have taken better care of him then usual prisoners. Considering in their law it may take weeks to in prison waiting to get a trial that could, if found guilty, imprison you for 30 years for carrying a firearm; up to 5 years for carrying a knife.
Yes, he has been shackled to his bed from time to time but all Mexican authorities claim it is a precaution brought on by his extensive military background. Upon expressed concern by the US Consulate General the shackles have since been removed. For his own safety he's also been removed from the general Mexican prison population and remains in a much safer area of the prison.

"Most recently he was visited by two consular officers on November 29. He was in good health and seemed safe." ~ Citizens Services Specialist, Office of American Citizens Services at the United States Department of State [in a letter to Mrs. Hammar, Jon's mother.]

Upon Jon's arrest he was carrying an unloaded antique rifle that just so happened to be an inch too short by Mexican standards. US border agents checked the rifle and upon him filling out a form, allowed him through. He was arrested after handing the Mexican officials the form.

Still, from my own heart this seems unjust. Yes it is law but Mexican officials are infamous for nudging the confines of the law one way or another to make a quick buck. It is advised in many places around south where my family lives that if they do head over to Mexico, them must stay on the resorts. Venturing off the resorts may result in your ungaranteed safety, and should be done at your own risk. I personally don't believe the rifle is too short. If it was the border agents would never allowed it over. The fact that he was arrested, not sent back, upon appropriately presenting the form only adds to the suspicion.

Oh man, linking tourist destinations that are only kept that way due heavy investment by American, Canadian, and European businesses who want to sell timeshares and vacation packages.

Go take a look at the real Mexico. It's essentially a "third world country" and on the verge of being declared a failed state.

How about we do an exchange, 1 marine for 11 million illegals? Or if that doesn't work, give us our marine back or we jail 11 million illegals?

  • 12.20.2012 12:25 PM PDT

Doesn't matter that he's american, he was doing something illegal, he faces the consequences.

[Formally] Being in the Armed Force doesn't make you immune of all laws and it shouldn't. I haven't read the details but if he was truly doing an illegal action (such as having that gun where it isn't allowed) then he gets arrested. It's not whether or not he can be taken out. It's should he be.

The answer is (if he was commiting illegal action, foreign country or not) no. He's in jail, too bad.

Real Mexico? I've lived in Mexico for most of my life and I have no idea what you are talking about. You have much to learn.
Yet my brothers work with a whole bunch of Mexican citizens that just got into the states within the past couple years. Ask one about his brother and he drags his finger across his throat. Ask another about his parents and me makes a finger gun shooting action to the back of his own skull.

Consider yourself blessed because every single Mexican I've ever talked to, my brothers have ever talked to, my parents have ever talked to, or my family on the Mexican border has ever lived with about the quality of life in Mexico and you will be killed by a stare. I understand you live there, I know many that do, but passing off someone's ignorance on the matter by claiming their implications do not exist is arbitrary, at best. Nobody I've ever met who's lived in Mexico in the conditions that they lived in ever want to go back.

Albeit most of the time they are either Americans victim of Political and Judicial corruption in Mexico (American tourists are the favorite target), or they are Mexican citizens living a little too close to Cartel controlled space. Either way *Shrugs*

The President has been emailed about it, and if you read my post further up on this page, has allowed those under his services to take action, since he can't physically. The only real action we can do is allow the Americans in Mexico that have the authority to take action take action, and pound them with as much bad press as possible. Admittedly we are doing less than we possibly can, but it's not like the matter has gone on ignored.

This is not a matter of "regard for our troops" because the fact that he is in the military is irrelevant to the situation. It is just banter on a whole slew of mental tweaks the American media does every day to draw our attention to a matter of interest. Notice how I quoted that several cases like this happen a year to normal American civilians and it gets little to no attention whatsoever, yet you throw in the title "Marine" and mentioned that he served and it is suddenly a hot-button issue.

The fact that we are hearing about this particular case is testament. American Media puppeteer at its finest.

Just throwing it out there, but Mexico has lower rates of quite a lot of violent crime. Reported rates of theft, -blam!-, aggravated assault, etc. are all much higher in the United States than in Mexico.

Mexico is just like anywhere else - you'll reduce your risk of crime to near negligible levels if you stay away from urban poverty.

What no one seems to understand is that this man was passing through Mexico with his friend en route to Costa Rica for vacation. Even the U.S. Border Patrol allowed him to proceed after they inspected the vehicle.

It is incredibly obvious that he was wrongly imprisoned based on false accusations and is being used for ransom. He was even supposed to have a "trial" but the judge, jury and supposed witnesses never showed up.

Mexico is corrupt, and I'm not surprised this happened. The man clearly had no harmful intentions. Personally, I think we ought to go get our Marine back.
