I doubt he was immigrating anywhere.
Nah, he was committing a very small .And being held on ransom, fitting. (sarcasm)
Regardless, it isn't as big as our media is making it out to be.
"Mexico has stringent weapon laws, and enforces them strictly. As a result, several U.S. citizens are arrested each year under similar circumstances as Jon. When U.S. citizens are arrested overseas, a consular staff from the U.S. Embassy or closest U.S. consulate will visit them, provide a list of local attorneys, and monitor the progress of their case. Jon's case is proceeding through the Mexican system. He was initially represented by a public defender but now has private legal representation." ~ Citizens Services Specialist, Office of American Citizens Services at the United States Department of State [in a letter to Mrs. Hammar, Jon's mother.]
The US Consulate General in Mexico learned of his imprisonment August 26th, 2012 and visited him that same . Since then, Mexican authorities have taken better care of him then usual prisoners. Considering in their law it may take weeks to in prison waiting to get a that could, if found guilty, you for 30 years for carrying a firearm; up to 5 years for carrying a knife.
Yes, he has been shackled to his bed from time to time but all Mexican authorities claim it is a precaution brought on by his extensive military background. Upon expressed concern by the US Consulate General the have since been removed. For his own safety he's also been removed from the general Mexican prison population and remains in a much safer area of the prison.
"Most recently he was visited by two consular officers on November 29. He was in good health and seemed safe." ~ Citizens Services Specialist, Office of American Citizens Services at the United States Department of State [in a letter to Mrs. Hammar, Jon's mother.]
Upon Jon's he was carrying an unloaded antique rifle that just so happened to be an inch too short by Mexican standards. US border agents checked the rifle and upon him filling out a form, allowed him through. He was arrested after handing the Mexican officials the form.
Still, from my own heart this seems unjust. Yes it is law but Mexican officials are infamous for nudging the confines of the law one way or another to make a quick buck. It is advised in many places around south where my family lives that if they do head over to Mexico, them must stay on the resorts. Venturing off the resorts may result in your ungaranteed safety, and should be done at your own risk. I personally don't believe the rifle is too short. If it was the border agents would never allowed it over. The fact that he was arrested, not sent back, upon appropriately presenting the form only adds to the suspicion.
