I think the changes from H1 to H2, H2 to H3 and even H3 to Reach were gradual expected and progressive changes. I can understand all of the changes, even I disagree with them, and all of Bungie's works have gripped me for a couple of years of play time each.
H4 doesn't seem like a progressive natural evolution of the latest Halo games. It's a weird frankenstein patchwork quilt of a game, with bits borrowed from other franchises, others from H3 and Reach, and some random wildcard things too. The changes to CTF just aren't natural changes in my eyes, nor is the removal of staples like Assault or even Firefight.
I've been playing Invasion lately and I must admit I have been having a freaking blast. It's a really great gametype that just reminds me of how interesting and creative a Halo game could be, oh and with Elites in there too to mix it up.
I wouldn't say H4 is mediocre. I'd say its a good game, just not a great game like we have been used to.
