I liked the book. There are some things that I disagree with, with Holden, but others I think he's right on. From what I can remember of it that is.
I wouldn't go so far as to call him a hero, but I did like him as a character/person.I think why English majors say it is such a good novel, is the character. Now that I think of it, I don't think I've encountered another character in a book that was written as human as Holden was.
He has self conflict and is not bigger then life like most main characters are. Both are very rare in novels (although they shouldn't be). Whether you agree with him or not you can see someone, an actual human, being like him.
I mean hell, we're on the internet, a video game forum and discussing Holden Caulfield. That alone should be proof of good Character writing.
