That said I have never heard of Catcher in the Rye. Enlighten me.
It's a literary classic, and literally the best book ever written.

You need to read more.

I actually read quite a lot. I really do.

I'm just surprised. I didn't hate the book, but I didn't think it was that great. The best book I ever read for school was probably Catch-22.

That book wasn't good at all. Even the author hated it. It's meaningless drivel.

That's simply untrue.

In memory of those fallen in the defense of Earth and her colonies.

March 3, 2553

Have never read it..... I don't think I plan to though I know it's a great book.

The Renaissance Man; The Bigger Fool.

I liked the book. There are some things that I disagree with, with Holden, but others I think he's right on. From what I can remember of it that is.

I wouldn't go so far as to call him a hero, but I did like him as a character/person.

He's the hero of whiny hipster doucheland.

This thread is proves why he is an awesome character. The only people who don't have a stance on him are people who haven't read the book. Anyone who has either loves him or hates him.

He's just a lonely, angsty, Teenager.

That doesn't make him any less of a hero.
Heros aren't lonely, angsty, Teenagers.

When was that made a literary rule?

Yeah, what about spiderman

He's not hipster. He's emo without the makeup. If you are going to say he is part of an annoying pointless clique, use the right one.

I think why English majors say it is such a good novel, is the character. Now that I think of it, I don't think I've encountered another character in a book that was written as human as Holden was.

He has self conflict and is not bigger then life like most main characters are. Both are very rare in novels (although they shouldn't be). Whether you agree with him or not you can see someone, an actual human, being like him.

I mean hell, we're on the internet, a video game forum and discussing Holden Caulfield. That alone should be proof of good Character writing.
