Though the morrow may be barren of promises, nothing shall forstall my return.

Ok so a little while back, I heard there is a place, or even possibly a few places in Hawaii that you can find a man who gives tattoos. The thing is though, these are special. It is a great honor to be able to receive one of these for one. From what I am told, once he agrees to do one for you, you sit down and tell him pretty much your life story. Once finished he will think and when he is ready he will give you a tattoo that defines you. One that is completely you, all to the core. The thing is though, he also picks out the place for it as well.

I have not found any info on this however, so it could very well have been a rumor. I am hoping that it is not. Has anyone else ever heard of this or might even have some info on it?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Sounds interesting. I'd want to know what my tattoo is.

"If practice makes perfect" and 'nobody's perfect,' then what's the point of practice?"

I told him my story and he tried to tattoo my backdoor.

Darn, I suppose I'm the only one who has actually heard of it then? Shame

If you're not trolling and that's actually true, that sounds really interesting and I'd love to do that. Always wondered too how an actual tribal tattoo would be like, with it being done with bamboo and ink versus the pointless tribal tattoos everybody has.

What if I told you...

*scoots in closer*

I hate you

I must find him!

The thing is... Alright, the thing is I killed you once already... and it's not like I am -blam!- crazy.

Is it a tatoo of a Shark, Heron or Spider?

I am being completely honest, it is something I heard and have really been contemplating for a good while now. I would love to get at shot at this. I don't think the system would be quite as primitive as that though. I doubt it would be a needle gun either though. I have however seen tribal tattoos of passage that use things like chisels and truly will test your metal. I saw a doc on one where by the third day the guy needed help walking after it was done.

Roll with the hits, not under them.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

There are a few people who match this description. The one in Hawai'i that I know of may be the one you're referring to. The guy uses a tapper (kinda like a wooden handle with several needles embedded in the end) for doing tattoo work, and he has a couple different kinds for lines or shading.

He only tattoos native Hawaiians and Japanese-Hawaiians. If you're white, Chinese, black, red, pink, purple, whatever, he'll turn you away with decent manners and an absolutely zero nonsense sort of attitude.

This form of tattooing is actually practiced all across the Pacific. There are artists in Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, New Guinea, the Maldives, etc who operate under similar auspices. If it weren't for the fact that a lot of Japanese traditional artists do the same style of story-building ink, I'd say it was a Polynesian thing. With the Japanese culture, this was something that was typically only done for Yakuza, and the tattoos were nearly full body with the exception of all those places that would be exposed in a kimono robe at a public bath house. With Maori cultures, the tattoos are often full body in a long lasting legacy, but some were for specific body parts.

For some of the Pacific Islands, it's mainly a face, arms, and thighs thing.

No, I will not share the guy in Hawai'i's name. But hopefully this answered a few questions for you.

Heh, if he was a white guy that only tattooed other white guys, he would be arrested for racism, no matter how politely he turns them down
