Sci-Fi, though Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie ever.

A little bit of both I guess.

Why not both? Science fantasy is my choice.

So basically the application of scientific explanation of fantasy elements within fantasy? Star Wars' midichlorians? Lost's electromagnetic energy?

But set in a relative past?

Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo

I've always preferred fantasy, if ever so slightly. Really it depends on the content of the media and how it's presented, but I think overall I enjoy fantasy stories more just because they can be more abstract and separated from reality; sci-fi tends to keep itself more grounded.

Warhammer 40K is science fantasy. Just picture that.

It's when the supernatural does exist outside of scientific explanation, in a futuristic sci-fi setting. Things like the Warp in 40K and the living Force in SW (midi-chlorians are how we communicate with it) are supernatural in a technological world.

I see. I always considered the Warp how I consider the Chaos in my own fantasy series: a place of constant physical turmoil. That's the simplest, least elaborate way of describing it. I guess, though, the Warp doesn't include constant creation accompanying the destruction that occurs within it.

Science fiction, however ridiculously-named it may be.

Roberto pretty much covered it. 40k, and Star Wars would be science fantasy, Lord of the Rings and Discworld would be fantasy, Aliens and Halo would be science fiction.

Because unknown physical elements are/aren't explained? What about the Halo Array's ability to kill all sentient life in a certain radius?

It was explained as super massive neutrinos in a piece of technobabble I can't care to remember properly. Since Halos apparently kill the universe itself, it has gotten a bit more fantasy than pure science fiction.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

There are more fantasy stories that I like, but the science fiction stories I like, I like them a lot more.

Does that make sense?

I prefer fantasy over sci-fi. I couldn't really get into sci-fi. the original Star Wars trilogy was okay but not from my time and the prequels of course were -blam!- terrible. I mean seriously, even as a kid I never liked them. They were all long as -blam!- and were incredible boring save for the over the top CGI and choreographed lightsaber duels, however even those began to leave me unimpressed as I grew up. Lord of the Rings however captivated me in a way that no other story ever had. While I never fully understood it as a kid, I still enjoyed every second of it. I also think that Dragon Age: Origins is one of the best games in its genre of all time, much more deep than say, Elder Scrolls.
