Subject: What is spam?

For the longest time now I've seen people label certain things as "spam" where I would disagree. It got me wondering about what people think spam is. So, regardless of what the rules say, what can you tell me about it? What do you define spam to be? What are its characteristics? Are there certain levels/amounts you can tolerate? etc...

There are no right answers to this question, but a dictionary definition is not what I'm after, only your opinion.

Halo: Tactical

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more...

Anyways. I see spam as useless crap, or stuff sent on a large scale.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I think spam is anything off-topic or remade (parody threads, users making the same thread over a small period of time, etc). But the rules are open to interpretation as to what is on topic and what is spam.

I think if you had a strict definition as to what spam was then more people would get banned and it could also let more people get away with spamming (if it is done in a way that is not defined as spamming, depending on what you look at as spam).

Ultimately, I say it is up to the forum ninja to decide if something is spam or not because I think it varies. For instant if the OP double posts it could be considered (spam/bumping) but if a person replies to another thread double posting it wouldn't be considered spam.

Every post I don't like is spam.

A thread that doesn't have any discussion value, or a post that doesn't contribute to the thread topic.

I would consider the "inb4" spam.

  • 12.21.2012 7:16 AM PDT

I consider spam to be anything off topic in a thread, parody threads, and repeat threads. I also consider anything that doesn't contribute to the topic to be spam also.
The most common spam I see on Bungie.net (particularly in The Flood) TLDR, fap, and parody/repeat threads.

Yeah and I don't consider one line responses like (no, yes, maybe) as spam because they do address the OP and contribute to the discussion.

I know this will be a popular answer, so could you expand on either/both of them?

"fap" is usually a legitimate answer to OP's question in the flood.

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

Posts (or threads) that are both off-topic and have minimal discussion value.

"Life to you stepson and everlasting glory. " Thifes World.

Anything that mimics or repeats a Subject, topic or discussion. Problem being some interpret rules differently in many ways trying to skirt it to out right subverting or breaking them both in spirit and meaning.

This is a opinion i have had over being on the web for sometime visiting sites. I love bungie for its loose fun forums not letting in foolishness or unfun topics that degenerate into pointless arguments and rhetoric.

I am a old cranky person these days but not mean spirited. I just tolerate less try to be fair but i cannot tolerate bigotry, trolling, flaming and other such nefarious activities of those who seek to get off on others getting mad.

"You mad bro"Topics other such things here takes away from a pleasant atmosphere of speaking about games and having a overall good time here.

Yeah and that is a good point also, I guess you could almost consider anything against the rules spam because it is off-topic to what is expected on Bungie.net.

You have to almost have no text in a topic for it to have no discussion value. Almost every thread can be turned to have some discussion value but it is only bad I guess when it breaks the rules or are responses to the thread that serve no purpose in continuing the discussion.

They love to go off topic quick ive noticed. Ending up in flame wars or the like. Not saying they have to agree with everything but try to be mature about it instead of it degenerating into a goopy off topic mess.

I don't think they are off-topic, the problem is the thread itself has become a Parody like porch day, it has been done so many times that the thread topic has become kind of an inside joke.

I realize this guy is joking, but the vast majority of The Flood actually behaves with this mentality.

thread : posting something which cannot be discussed or does not invite the opportunity of discussion.

post : something like "tl;dr"//"k" or anything which doesn't contribute to the discussion or subject of the thread.
