Subject: What is spam?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Here's my version of "What is/counts as spam?";- Special characters, all-caps usage and attention-grabbing characters are all prohibited.
- Threads that only require a one-liner reply such as a number or rank.
- Misleading links.
- ASCII art.
- Petitions.
- Posts in any language other than readable and intelligible English.
- "Bumping" a thread solely to bring it back to the top of the forum.
- Creating the same thread or post over and over again.
- Creating pointless threads as part of a "mass" or "organized" spam attack.
- Thread OPs that contain only a hyperlink
- Thread OPs that evidently do not try to generate a consistent discussion
- Threads that encourage the posting of song lyrics
- Parody threads
- Intentionally rude/innuendo titles
- Biased polls
- Threads about other threads
- Topics in the wrong forum

"Life to you stepson and everlasting glory. " Thifes World.

Ever sit at a desk then look under it to find gum stuck all over it and you start to feel unclean. Opening it inside you notice it is old and dusty.

Kinda like a spam post. Deeper you go more uncomfortable you feel till you cannot stand it any more vowing to never read it again or stab thy eyeballs out.

Your pants etc touched the gum a icky feeling. Thus vowing to never sit at said desk again.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Sam's list is pretty good and I agree with it.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Useless stuff like false videos or misleading titles, stuff that is posted a massive amount of times for the sole purpose of clogging the front page or to annoy people, etc.
Basically anything that offers no discussion value, because it makes it harder for us to find real stuff worth discussing.

Yes Costco. I need a 50lb bag...I mean sack of sugar.

What is spam?

Snide remarks that offer no real value to the discussion at hand.
Yes or no replies that are literally just yes or no.
inb4, tldr, etc.
The 4th or 5th thread that talks about the same issue in one day.
Parody threads are borderline. It really depends on if it is funny or not.
Responses that are better suited for PMs.
Scifi universe vs. Scifi universe threads.
Superhero vs. Superhero threads.

And as robbo said, ultimately it is something that isn't black or white, so exceptions exist. I guess it depends on the mood of whoever reads it that day.

NON FACET NOBIS CALCITRARE VESTRUM PERNÇ¢UM

Spam (shortened from spiced ham) is a canned precooked meat product made by the Hormel Foods Corporation, first introduced in 1937. The labeled ingredients in the classic variety of Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Spam's gelatinous glaze, or aspic, forms from the cooling of meat stock
^This is what Spam is.

EDIT: but for the forums, I'd reference Sam's post at the top of the page.

Shakes Magic 8 Ball

Generally what I consider as spam is anything that is said, only to be said and follows no other statement other than the fact that they're there.

Such as giving a yes or no answer to a question, or repeating the same answer in multiple threads. Perhaps even to noticing when people reply to other people just for the sake of adding onto another pointless comment. Spam on top of spam.

Pointless threads with no intended aim to them, nor any real purpose other than casual conversation. If people are interested in having conversations with people, then they should go and do that.

A simple life.

Arguing about stupid/pointless things is spam

Spam to me is repeating a post over and over. Spam to me is repeating a post over and over. Spam to me is repeating a post over and over. Spam to me is repeating a post over and over.

The above is a form of spam.

I think spam is anything off-topic or remade (parody threads, users making the same thread over a small period of time, etc). But the rules are open to interpretation as to what is on topic and what is spam.
So if you quote-post, that is spam. Good to know, I'll be sure to call you out on it in the future.

OT: Something that is (1) nonconstructive, (2) very much removed from the topic or theme of the thread or forum in which it is posted, or (3) which directly and openly violates one or more of the forum rules not including the spam one as that would be circular logic. This includes malicious or misleading links (1, 2, 3), ASCII art (1, 2), "taking over" a thread and changing the subject (1, 2, 3), excessive, even if accidental derailment (1, 2, 3), posting the same thing in many threads (1, 2), parody threads (1), and any other post that fits into one of these three categories. All spam, in my opinion is not a bannable or warnable offense, but I do believe that if something can be described as one of those three, it is spam.

Break down, every single one of you.

The continuous posting and reposting of threads, messages, or images in a way that does not add to the conversation or is not related to the topic.

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Spam is that stuff I sift through to reply to posts that matter...

  • 12.21.2012 2:27 PM PDT

In my opinion, spam is anything that someone posts which is not intended to generate discussion.

  • 12.21.2012 3:08 PM PDT

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

Spam is the monument to all of our sins.

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

Replying to an inappropriate thread?

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

Spam, to me at least, is any post that's off-topic and/or posted in an attempt to be disruptive.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

Apparently, it's everything that makes the internet so entertaining.

Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more...

Anyways. I see spam as useless crap, or stuff sent on a large scale.

I agree except one of things that makes me crazy is that everyone else does the exact opposite.

And since when were you the Roger Ebert of forum posts??

Don't do anything you wouldn't want to have to explain to paramedics. Trust me, I'm a pilot.

In my opinion, spam is anything that is used to draw attention to the user or to his or her topic, similar threads by the same user facilitating similar discussions, a post that does not add any discussion value to a thread or, as the case may be, is irrelevant to the topic of the thread.
