How will the schools afford this?

I think the NRA said that they will help pay for it

They should pay for all of it.
For EVERY school in the US? The amount would be..A lot.

So it's safe to say that this probably won't happen.
A lot of parents feel strongly about the safety of kid in school. And I'm sure it'll get good funding - as it's a favorable idea. Anything is possible.

I'm still waiting for a intelligent, and practical counter arguement. I don't support the NRA or their political agenda, but this isn't as terrible of a suggestion as some are making it out to be.

So we're treating kids like they're in a prison now?

Yup, cause that's exactly what the proposal was about.

Pretty much. Pretty soon they will want guards in every house.

Yup, cause that's exactly what the proposal was about.

Well, without any article about it to read, that's my initial impression.

i think they should put veterans at the schools, that way kids get to ask them questions and talk to them, and the veterans get to interact with kids.

In the wake of an elementary school shooting, and amid multiple accusations that the NRA is at fault, you assume that a proposal to have armed guards at every school is geared towards locking down the students? Quite the stretch there Max.

They are essentially suggesting militarizing every school in the country. That's ridiculous.

Violence happens elsewhere in the country aside from schools, so how soon until they're suggesting contracted militarized security to patrol all public places in the name of "safety"?

What article did you read? The only one I saw was a proposal to have a police officer on every campus. How you go from that to "militarizing every school" is beyond me.

I think that may be an innaccurate paraphrasing.

If I am not mistaken, the idea is that if/when a responsible and law abiding adult who has taken the time and gone through the training, testing, background checks and application process in order to legally CCW, that schools (and other "gun free zones" which have been demonstrated to actually be "defenseless victims zones, any mass murderer will have many minutes before anyone who is equipped to stop the rampage will be able to arrive and intervene") allow those legal and law-abiding holders of CCW to choose whether or not that can/will carry onto the site.

Not the same as "lets put up guard towers, barbed wire and armed guards at schools". Actually, since I was in school, the first two steps have become commonplace. Schools are FAR less open and locked down than when I was a student. I remember in high-school, plenty of trucks in the parking lot (student and staff) with gun racks in the rear-window that had shotguns/rifles in them, depending on what was in season. We didn't have "gun free zones" and we didn't have mass shootings either.

This. Gun free zones don't work, end of story.

There isn't an article linked so I didn't. But when I hear "armed guard" I don't think of police I think private security.

Most schools already have a police officer on campus, not elementary schools obviously because they're usually there to prevent violence among the students, and you don't expect incidents to happen like this among little kids.

Then you have to think that your typical police officer is only armed with a standard issue handgun at all times. If someone comes on campus wearing body armor and carrying assault weapons what is he going to do? How armed should the police officer be? Should we be arming them better so it's easier to stop people like this?

And if we're going to arm the police heavier at schools, shouldn't we be doing that in general? Since violence like this can happen anywhere. Should the entire police be militarized because we're afraid? Fear and anger are the emotions which lead to control. History has shown that pretty clearly. I might sound paranoid but you can't deny history.

The NRA press release just served to make me giggle. They have no clue what they are talking about.

The campus police at my university are armed already, so this does not really affect me.

Good idea, as far as I'm concerned, seeing as nobody is ever going to actually ban guns in the USA. Oh, and there are a few people ITT whose replies have disappointed me. I thought you'd be more rational.

The NRA serves as a lobby for gun manufacturers, and that's it.

It might seem heartless that they could care less about the little kids. But the bottom line is money for them.

In this whole debate, it's worth pointing out that the movie theater shooter and the Sandy hook shooter were both wearing body armor. The movie theater shooter set of some kind of smoke bomb in the theater before he started shooting.

Given how rare these events actually are, and given how people who commit them take steps to ensure that they are at least somewhat protected, I don't think putting armed guards or letting people carry guns in schools is going to stop this sort of thing from happening. I think it will only make some people feel marginally safer.

UnitedBands.net

My band and artist networking/information site. Check it out!

Granted i went to a larger high school, 1600 kids. But we had 3 armed police officers on the grounds. They weren't rent a cops, legitimate police officers place there by the district.

It's already the standard from what I know. Maybe not in elementary schools, but for sure middle and high schools already do this in my area.

LOVE THE IDEA!

In fact Utah, Idaho, and Montana have already been doing this since 2008 and I'm all for it.

With proper training this is a fantastic idea.

Of course the liberal commie tree hugging democrats are not going to think so. For some -blam!- homo-blam!- reason they think taking all the guns from the innocent will protect them from the evil guilty men that have guns.

Hence why proper ammunition is so vital in situations like this. A .44 magnum will go through a vest like an ex-wife going through your life savings.

Trust me there is ammunition out there they could carry that will do the job.

Bottom line BRING IT!
