For those who aren't familiar with the term,an audiophile is a person who cares about high-fidelity sound reproduction and will almost always listen to music at the highest quality they can grasp. Do some of you look up to audiophiles as appreciators of music? Or rather crazy people that spend way too much money on audio equipment?

In my point of view, any person that tries to get the best sound rig they can afford; whether for at-home-use or on-the-go, and be content with that and enjoy their music is in my books, an audiophile. So Flood, what are your thoughts and opinions on audiophiles?

By the way, I consider myself an audiophile. Feel free to ask me anything related to audio; from equipment, to music tastes.

Drecker225 is awesome and doesn't afraid of anything.

I cannot wait for the day when I gain control of the world.

I agree with a majority of their opinions, considering I am an audiophile myself.

I understand the concept. But then there are the douche bags who are always up their own ass about it.

TRU7H. CARNAGE. BUNGIE

well I have a decent 5.1..

Personally I view it as a waste of money since it doesn't really make all that much of a different to justify the few $100-1000 more for a pair of headphones/speakers.

Which headphones or speaker system did you listen to that made you feel that way? Once I got my hands on a decent pair of cans, I realized I wouldn't ever want to go back to how things were before.

Having top-notch audio quality brings out the best in the music. I guess I just enjoy it a lot; I can sit and just listen for hours.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

There was a time when "good sound" cost a bundle.

But there are now so many affordable rigs that are capable of sufficiently high-quality audio that the term audiophile (at least to me) has come to mean "someone who doesn't mind spending a great deal of money for a very hard to notice difference in performance".

That is a very understandable view. It is true that the money we spend for audio equipment alone is quite staggering, but the love of music justifies the price.

I have an account, but barely use it. Created it so I could get advice on which 2.1 system to buy.

Butter my ass, turn around, spread open my butt cheeks, and say "Right here mutha-blam!-a!!"

Join Planetary Annihilation and Speed Haven

I like my audio, but I have a budget too. My headphones are good enough for the price, and my speakers are good for the price.

You are acting like I can't tell the difference in quality which isn't true at all. I just would rather spend the money elsewhere instead of getting slightly better quality sound.

Aslong as it sounds decent. Now need to spend over-odds

And that's the difference between a normal person and an audiophile. To me the extra costs are worthwhile.

Haha, I see. So what 2.1 did you end up buying? You should visit the forums some time. I still stay around since the community there is really friendly and helpful. Heck they helped me decide my first pair of IEMs! Good times.

I went with the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set. It's amazing.

The farthest I'd go is buying some good headphones. Not exclusively downloading only the highest quality audio files which usually come compressed and have to be extracted/ converted, etc.

I heard those were really good. For $165 on Amazon, you really get the bang for your buck. Would you recommend this for me? I was never really into the speaker scene of audio and listened to music exclusively via headphones so I don't know much about computer speakers. I mainly use my mediocre Pioneer 2.1's for gaming and a little music listening when no one's at home. Can you suggest better alternatives if they are any?

I consider myself an audiophile. I notice and like the subtler things in the music I listen to, and when a headset/speaker/earbuds, doesn't make the subtler things audible, it really agitates me. Like I can't stop thinking about it or listen to certain songs till I fix it. I mean I don't go nuts spending on audio equipment, but I get what I can afford.

Guess we are on the same boat. Once you climb up the ladder higher, you can't go back down.

Nahman Jayden, Eff bee eye. I herd that you're the origammy killah...

I used to be one
It's pretty fun, just going through thousands of songs with a nice pair of headphones

  • 12.21.2012 9:29 AM PDT

I agree that all presidents should serve 2 terms. 1 in office and 1 in prison

If that is their thing, then more power to them. I like having nicer speakers and what not, but I am pretty sure I am not on the level of "audiophile."

In that case what would happen if you went to a concert would you not be able to listen to that song anymore or what?

As long as the bass is at a decent level, and it doesn't sound like it's being played through 5 layers of brick, I honestly can't tell the difference between a $60 pair of headphones to a $160 pair of headphones.

I can understand being an audiophile though. If you take a cheap pair of earbuds and compare the sound to a $20 pair, there is a huge quality jump just from that, and it does bug me.
