Why? Insurance companies decide what rates to charge their customers on a variety of factors based on how much they expected payout is for that person. Why shouldn't gender be one of those factors?
Because there is such a large push in the direction of gender equality. How these rates are based upon is really statistics. Would you be alright if it was found that a certain race was twice as likely to be prone to car accidents, and should then be charged more for their insurance? Most would call that racism, much like how differing insurance rates can be seen as sexism.
Ageism isn't being pushed, for example, because the elderly are far more aware of the fact that they are prone to accidents far more. But women push for gender equality, so why should they not have to pay the same?
