Per Audacia Ad Astra

There's usually an option to activate/deactivate WiFi via connection settings.

Good question.

It's likely that your phone will use the optimal method of connection; the one of higher quality, automatically.

If there's no wifi signal available it should default to the mobile connection. Usually..

Well first you have to be near a Wifi signal, but usually there is a little signal notification icon (for Wifi, not 3g) in your status bar.

If your wifi is on, and your accessing a wifi signal, it will not use 3G. If you are not near a wifi source, and your phones data is turned on it will use it's 3/4G.

Foman is my favorite moderator. <3

Automatically will switch to a Wifi signal if available, at least with my iPhone.

You can tell because it will have a little Wifi icon rather than the 3G symbol...

Which is usually wifi.

But you have to setup the wifi. fyi. Unless you wifi is it to automatically connect to an open wifi.

I always turn my wifi and data off when not in use.

If you don't want it to use 3G, go into Settings > General > Mobile/Cellular data > Deactivate 3G and Mobile/Cellular Data. Then it'll only work with wi-fi.
