I just saw a clip of a BBC show discussing China and he said "Many regard the last 100 years as the American century, the next 100 could very well be the Chinese century".

Now I have a problem with this, America only come to global power at 1945 possibly 1990 with the fall of the Soviet union.

As far as im concerned from 1814 to 1945 was the British Era, if anything America has only been on top for 70 years.

Do you agree with the BBC presenter?

That's incredibly inaccurate, America hasn't been a world power nearly long enough to constitute the last century as being "ours."

Quote from Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

If you mean the American century as the most powerful military force then yes that would make sense for the last 50 years.

America (U.S) was still a rather large rising power. America managed to kick out spain/britain and russia out of the western hemisphere. That itself, is a pretty large achivement.

Crusades were worse, I believe. Although my knowledge of world history is pretty slim.

The Crusades were off and on for a while, but they weren't nearly as bloody as the world wars were.

Naval battles. Island hopping in the Pacific. Trench warfare. No Mans land. etc.

The Crusades were bad and lasted for a long time, but none of them were fully successful. It was doomed from the start.

How about looking at all it's accomplishments in the last 100 years?

>First country to land a man on the moon.
>Only country able to rival Russia in the Cold War.
>Became one of the most (if not THE most) powerful armed forces in the world.
>Able to manufacture military and social goods that blasted us out of a depression in a matter of a few years.

These are just some small notes. I could give you much more if I could go back 200 years. I am SICK of people having this notion that America just sat on it's ass until 1990.

You did that from 1912 to now??

No you did that during WW2 until now, British Dominance only ended in 1945 so thats not 100 years of American supremacy.

Also, the US Marines carried most of the war against the Japanese in WWII. Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Pavuvu, Guadalcanal, etc.

Britain still had power around oregon until a compromise was met with the U.S. The brits. Also wanted texas to try and regain power in the west. But even then, americans really didn't do much else until later on in their lifespan (this is 19 century). I don't know much about 20th but americans created cars, morse code, nylon and a couple other widely used things.

British Dominance? Okay, I'll go back 200 years. Who FORCED Japan to open up trading ports? Who was the first to abolish slavery? Who was able to rival the British Navy 200 years ago? What country had all the inventors? Which country gave more leverage to workers? Which country was able to mass produce and manufacture?

Here's a hint: Not Britain.
