Subject: ALAC vs MP3

So, I've been hearing that music in an ALAC format sound better than MP3 format, however, I've also heard that ALAC files take up alot more room on your ipod and don't sound much(if any) better than MP3s unless you have a really nice set of earbuds/headphones(atm of only got a pair of JVC Marshmallows). Plus, if I understood correctly, I'd have to re-rip all my CDs to get them in ALAC. So Flood, what do you guys think? Are ALACs worth the extra space? Do you have to have really high quality earbuds/headset to notice the difference?

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

If you've got a cheap pair of JVC gumies and aren't dumb enough to use an iPod over an mp3 player then mp3 is probably the way to go.

There's something wrong about using an iPod over a MP3 player?

ALAC?

I've only heard about FLAC, and unless you're an audiophile with crazy sound system/whatever, MP3 is fine

Ok, so it's not really worth the space then unless I have a high quality headset? ALAC, if I understand correctly, is more or less FLAC that is compatible with an iPod.

Correct. Apple decided to be -blam!-s and create their own lossless compression file type. :/

Ah well my bad, never touched anything iPod related :P

But as far as I know, yeah. I have a few FLAC files but it doesn't sound different than the MP3s.
And that's what most audiophiles told me anyway

Ok, thanks, that's pretty much what I needed to know.

FLAC and WAV are the best audio formats, they sound identical, but WAV is a the larger file.

And yes, they do sound better than MP3s, ANYTHING sounds better than MP3s, MP3 is disgusting, and you should feel bad for using it.

The way I hear it, there are issues with using FLAC and WAV on the iPod. Does ALAC sound the same as them and is a high quality headset required to hear the difference as others have said? Cause if so, I'll just wait and re-rip my CDs after I get a quality pair of earbuds.
