This fine specimen is a prime exemplar of a "phony".

I love how you shout accusations without backing them up.

Tell me, how am I a phony?

Alright, Holden.

Holden Caulfield is actually one of my role models. Catcher In The Rye was fantastic.
He's not supposed to be a role model. He's supposed to be a character that is passive to the point that you can't pity him. He's not self-determinent, he's just an angsty teenager.

He's not "supposed" to be anything. Salinger never said one way or another if he's right or wrong.

But I believe that he's definitely right. Pretty much everyone he meets in the book is a phony, and there's not much he can do to make his life better.
Whether he's right or wrong is pointless, because the world does not function on right or wrong. Holden is a perfect example of an existential failure. And whatever Salinger's intentions, he did purposely write the character to be very much the teenager in maturity.

i don't know if you realize man, but what you do on this board reaaallly pisses people off. I know you get a kick out of it, but if your ass ever got dox'd, you'd be in some serious -blam!- trouble. There are people here who would love to exert actual physical violence upon you. Like me. Put a gun in my hand, and you within a mile of me, and you aren't waking up tomorrow. I'm dead serious. You should honestly be careful about pissing off large communities.

watch yourself

People usually get pissed off when you call them what they are. If I call you a phony, and you know that you're not, then it doesn't affect you. But if you know in your heart that you are, then you get pissed off at me for telling you.

He's not a failure in any way. See, Holden knows what's up, and he knows who he is. Maybe in the eyes of society, he's a failure (as he failed school and doesn't have a path to a "career"), but that doesn't matter. He's a legitimately kindhearted, generous person. And that's all that matters.

I persist too long after my own defeat,
Yet I still press forward, staggering on my feet.
But I know that my resolution will be my end.
And once I fall, I shall ruefully transcend.

Marvelous. I've acquired your attention. Now, I'd like to contradict your flawed notion pertaining to how you initially framed all-to-most individuals on this forum as being insincere, however, later on into this thread, you further explain to the one known as CamCamm that individuals on these forums are solely expressing who "they are".

Which one is it, cretin?

First off, stop talking in that goddam phony voice.

And yes, they were expressing who they are. And they're insincere phonies. That's who they are.

I've noticed a tendency to follow and to adopt interest, hobbies and outlooks merely to be in conformity with everybody else's ( or in some weird cases; bronies, which not many people like, but for some people, it seems cool to have an uncommon predilection for a kids' show ), but I wouldn't say it's a pervasive, because a lot of people here are smart and generally form their own opinions based on their experiences and mindsets.

Okay, I couldn't watch that whole thing. When he implied that self-worth is based on what car you drive, I had to end it.

That guy was a phony dick.

But allow me to to shed light on the matter. One who is a "phony" is insincere, and therefore... is not truly a "phony". An individual is who they wish to be. You have no say in the matter.

"Nice guy, I don't give a -blam!-... Good father? -blam!- YOU, go home and play with your kids!" That's the part I was reminded of. Is it really dishonest, is someone really being a phony, when they're the one contributing to society while another just sits down and complains about it?

What he's saying is that our surface person is not equivalent to our consciousness. We don't always act how we think. No one does. It doesn't mean anyone's dishonest. How one chooses to act is who one is, what you think about it is irrelevant. You don't allow a serial killer to live because he feels really bad about his crimes.

You raise a good point, but it ultimately fails. No one who is untrue and puts on a mask can truly "contribute". Is a doctor contributing if he's a jerk to others? No, he's making the world a more negative place.

You look at children. They don't contribute in the regular sense, but they're innocent. They don't hate others. The world would be better if everyone was like that.

Wrong. Have you ever seen House? Guy is an absolute dick, has even ruined some patient's relationships with their family in some episodes, but he saves lives. Saving lives is more important than him not pissing people off.

Children do indeed contribute to their parents and friends, just like everyone else contributes to their friends and family. That said, the reason everyone goes to school is so that they can become a functioning part of society rather than just a drain on it.

But House doesn't put on a tirade. He's a dick to people, and doesn't try to act any different.

And why do we go to school? To "be somebody". To "contribute". Simply by living, we are contributing. Simply by living, we are being somebody.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste

Stole many a man's soul and faith

Why do I fear that OP just read A Catcher in the Rye and is coming for us?
