Once again, you're overthinking it. If someone tells the world, "I like Kesha", for the sole reason of fitting in, then they're a phony.
But, how can we necessarily know that he or she is trying to fit in? We cannot know for certain exactly what a person is thinking or feeling, nor can we know the extenuating circumstances surrounding the statement. Coupled with the fact that text does not allow us to convey the nuances and expression of human speech to other people, it cannot be deemed for certain that this person is a phony. If we were to ask this person why he or she likes Kesha, and he or she responded with something to the effect of, "Because I'm fitting in," then we could assume that he or she is trying to fit in. However, this reasoning in itself is untrustworthy, as we cannot know if this response is the actual answer to the question we posed, in terms of accordance with that persons thoughts and feelings. So, because we cannot know for certain what a person thinks, then no one is a phony?
But for some people, you can tell that they're shifting their opinion to fit in. And don't tell me any different. Reading people isn't impossible.
