Wrong. Have you ever seen House? Guy is an absolute dick, has even ruined some patient's relationships with their family in some episodes, but he saves lives. Saving lives is more important than him not pissing people off.
Children do indeed contribute to their parents and friends, just like everyone else contributes to their friends and family. That said, the reason everyone goes to school is so that they can become a functioning part of society rather than just a drain on it.
But House doesn't put on a tirade. He's a dick to people, and doesn't try to act any different.
And why do we go to school? To "be somebody". To "contribute". Simply by living, we are contributing. Simply by living, we are being somebody.Whether house is honest or not is irrelevant. Your question was "Is a doctor contributing if he's a jerk to others?" And house most certainly generates all sorts of negative emotion for others. The fact is that what he adds (through his action) much outweighs what he takes away (through his speech).
Living is not contributing. Living is consuming. In order to make up for the consumption we bring upon the world, we must contribute through actions to society. Almost every single job there is contributes to another's ability to consume (build a house for people to live in, make the food that they eat, create entertainment for them). There are an elite who can inspire much more action through their speech than what they can undertake themselves. Even then, though, many of those elite got where they are by making humongous contributions (great inventions, performing in front of a nation, etc.).
Who says that you have to contribute? Society has done goddam nothing for me, what the hell do I owe it?
