Subject: Sophomore English II Honors Poem/Song Analysis Essay

In my English class, we were given an assignment to write an essay analyzing a poem or song.

Here's the assignment:
"You are to choose a poem or a song and analyze this on a figurative level. This does not mean that you are simply to go through stanza by stanza and summarize or paraphrase. I am not interested in the rhyme scheme, etc. You are to take a central idea or figurative approach."

-Minimum of two and a half pages in length.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of a Beatles, John Lennon, or Bowie song. But, Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds seems like a good choice.

"There's a very fine line between not listening, and not caring. I'd like to think that I walk that line every day."

Pick a song that actually means something to you.

What, personally? Or a song that I can appreciate musically?
I mean, I thought of The Killers and The White Stripes for good lyrics and smart writing, and certain music that speaks to me is usually profane in a way. :P

I doubt you're in honors if you lack the attention span to find your own content. Or either you're doing horrible in that class.

It's nothing about lacking an attention span, and I have a song in mind. I'm not looking for content for my essay, I'm looking for ideas, as I do tend to lack creativity.

Both, preferably?

Even if there's profanity, I'd take whatever, so long as you're confident that you can write a good, long analysis.

I mean, there are many ways to go about writing about a song.

I mean, my ideas of great songs that just have great lyrics would be "All These Things That I've Done" and "Spaceman" by The Killers, and "The Denial Twist" by The White Stripes.

Well if you want to go the route of poem over song, I'm a fan of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" for an assignment like this. There's a good bit you could write about it I feel.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

Pick a song that you enjoy listening to the most. Your favorite song that you would want to share.

Don't listen to this guy. Poe is too mainstream.

Who cares if it's profane? In an Honors class I would assume they don't really care if the song you choose isn't church friendly, so long as your writing is good.

Choose a song you love. The profanity is just more to write about.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

Do this song

Lots of things that you can form opinions about without being incorrect.
