I know that this movie is old, but since it is the Christmas season, I believe I should have at least one thing to say about this movie.
TL;DR on bottom.
The Polar Express is a movie that shows the journey a kid took to believe in Santa Clause. But I believe there is an even deeper meaning to this movie.
One thing I realized while watching this is that Tom Hanks played a lot of parts in this. The narrator is voiced by Tom Hanks, the Conductor is voiced by Tom Hanks, the Hobo Ghost is voiced By Tom Hanks , and so is Santa Clause himself.
I hypothesize that the people are all part of the narrator. The train is the physical form of the narrator's mind. The Conductor is the one that guides the narrator (let's just call him Tom) to believe. He is the physical form of believing in everything. Where as the Hobo ghost is the nonbeliever. He said that he owned the train once. He was being literal. The Hobo Ghost is the form of doubt. And at that moment, doubt controlled Tom's mind, so the Hobo Ghost was in charge.
Now, when Tom saw Santa Clause, he saw the identity that he was to become. Tom started believing, and everything was okay. When he got home, you see the Ghost on top of the train disappearing, this is the sign that all doubt has left his mind. Tom believes in Santa Clause.
In short: The Polar Express is the journey where Tom Hanks learns to believe in himself.
