I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

Yes. I care when people like or dislike me. Will it effect the way I behave around them? Yes. Will it sway my course of action? Yes. Is it the most important thing? Sometimes.
Why? Because half of what makes the world work is human interaction, and if people don't like you, they aren't going to interact with you as fairly or reasonably as they would if they did.
It's simple. Why would you not want someone to like you? Unless it's a special circumstance, being disliked by someone is completely useless, while being liked by someone has benefits. Not exactly. Plenty of people will judge others by those with whom they associate. It can do you plenty of good in terms of social standing to be disliked by [insert undesirable group here].
In those cases, it often does better good to avoid being associated with those groups. Retaining indifference, rather than developing distaste.
I've been in situations you're referring to. In ROTC in highschool while in my first and second year, the worst cadets in the program (druggies and flat-out law breakers) favored me, while at the same time I rose up to captaining the rifle team they were in (after they graduated - they're older than I am), ending up developing and retaining role-model status in the program, acing it four years in a row, all while never associating with them - but they still liked me.
