So I'm going to put my gaming pc in my room, but I live in a two story house and my room's on the second level. Now I need to hook it up to the family computers internet down on the first level. I thought of a cable running down to it but my mum does not want a cable going all the way from my room to the family computer. My brother bought a netgear wireless router for his laptop a few months ago, if I run it through that will I get Good connection when playing online games even if he's using it? or will it be slow or not connect to the internet?. Help me flood, you're my only hope.

It really boils down to your service. Netgear routers are alright in terms of range though, avoid 2wire

Thanks for the help, It would be around 5-6 metres from the wireless router to the spot where you would be standing right under where the computer will be. I'll have to check my service to make sure.

Wireless is fine. I've been gaming on PC on WiFi and I get the same ping even when I'm on a wired line.

Would my brother being on his laptop at the same time affect anything?

It shouldn't. I have my phone and an iPad connected to the same network, network performance is fine.

Signal isn't affected by someone downloading or streaming something online.

Yes.

If the router has the option for it, enable QoS and prioritise traffic originating from your PC's MAC address. If it only allows you to enter an IP address, set a static/reserved address for your computer by its MAC address.

Video cause your gaming to lag FYI even on 12MB Speed I have 2 Xbox consoles and they don't lag when you play them at the same time but when you stream videos your interned speed goes into that therefore slowing it down. If you have 3MBPS if will most likely cut you off when someone starts streaming.

On smaller devices it usually don't affect it because the data your are recieving, is a smaller format that your net can handle but with computers it will affect it in most cases.

Yes, it can. Depends what hes doing, same goes for your family downstairs. If they're downloading stuff/streaming movies you may have some problems but if they're just on twitter/facebook etc then you probably won't notice anything.

Unless you're referring to fragmentation (which is then only true at layer 2), that is completely wrong.

Disagreed, my 2Wire modem/router works great. That's what my Xbox feeds off of.
