Subject: Why do you people find competitive gaming fun?

ooga booga boooh

Hey Flood, former "competitive" gamer here.

I liked, and still do like, competitive gaming for many reasons. Firstly, it gives me a good challenge. I think that most of us, be it in the work field, academically, or even socially feel inclined to not stay at one level of skill. We feel the desire to get better at whatever we do. I think that is an innate aspect of being human. As such, it carries over to video games for some. I found competition fun!

Second, there are obvious gradations in gaming, both from natural talent and from those who practice. If I was naturally better than person X at a certain game, I wouldn't want to play someone lesser skilled than I. I'd be aware of that, and as such, it isn't exactly fair to play against that person over and over. I'd try and find players of my skill range.

I guess it all comes down to the person, too. Some of us just have a competitive nature and want to challenge ourselves. That's why I played competitive gaming myself.

Member of team Master Theory.

17th Mythic Conqueror of Halo 3.
5th Mythic Conqueror of ODST.
If you would like to know more about Mythic difficulty please go to this thread. Thank you.

Please do not send me "recruitment messages" as I'm not interested in joining any groups currently.

Apocalypse and Jacob summed it up very well. It's just more satisfying to learn more about the game as you play it and then be able to practice applying that knowledge and seeing results than it is to play mindlessly.
Striving to improve gives the feeling that there's actually something to show for the time invested.

Because I love being competitive in every aspect of my life.

I've always competed in video games. Even in the NES days with my brothers. I can't play and not care about how I'm doing.

I've been playing Halo since 2002. My earliest memories include hiding at the shotgun window on Damnation and killing my dad with grenades while playing co-op on Pillar of Autumn.

Not really. Your mom is over quite enough to make my fears mute.

I like to compete against, and at least with, other human players. NPCs can be fun but they will not be intelligent enough to replace human to human interaction over a digital medium anytime soon.

I also like to compete on an even playing ground, so I know I've won by skill and not chance. Why? Because I know that if I was in my opponents shoes, winning or losing, I would not want to encounter some bull-bIam!-. I also get the satisfaction that I have bested that other player.

MLG has made some excellent gametypes and maps for people to play evenly on. The only thing against them I have is that their wannabees are young and annoying.

^ Thinks a public match playlist is competitive gaming, most amusing.

So , uh, were you top page on GB? What circuit did you go to? Which team did you play for on SLB?

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

I love competing with other people and getting better at a game. I love seeing games differently at high level than most people do. Why? I guess it's just part of who I am. I do a lot of competitive things, so it's only natural that gaming follows that standard. I've made so many friends through competitive Halo 3, and I had so much fun earning my first 50, it's hard to forget those times. Do I ever get frustrated? Absolutely, but I never fail to get back up and start playing again. Same with anything else competitive, I suppose.

I am no means a pro at any game, but playing a heated match of CTF in Halo, or a good game of SnD in COD, is a blast, especially with friends.

I like playing with/against other people in that sense of competitive.

I don't like playing with people who care about stats, or who care about others stats.

I don't care about winning or losing, but having fun and being ridiculous while still being part of a team (it is possible).

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Some people like competition, some don't.
Such is life.

"Why do people enjoy playing games differently than me?"

  • 12.22.2012 10:15 AM PDT

I like being competitive because it is more fun when games are balanced and fair. Reach and 4 were way too random and that's why I can't stand them. Outside Halo however, Im not all that competitive unless someone else on the other team is trying way too hard. Something about Halo just makes me be a tryhard though.
