This.
I dont understand how much longer it needs to take for the idiots out there to realize this. You can kill people with alot of things, even a pencil, are we gonna ban those too? Guns arent the problem, certain individuals are. Guns dont tell you to do things, everyone ultimately and consciouly make their decisions and perform their actions. Inanimate objects alone are not capable of such things obviously. And if the US becomes entirely disarmed excluding armed forces, government, etc, well thats a whole other story, a bad one at that.

30,000 people in 8 square miles isn't a lightly populated town, on top of that it is within a county that has 700,000 people. Also, me hearing or not hearing gunshots is quite relevant, I've never heard a gunshot other than at the range or something similar. It is VERY relevant because people like you fail to take into account the vast majority of gunshot victims were tied in with drugs, gangs, or other similar activities. You rarely hear of people walking around killing people for fun, when that happens it is the top story across almost every news channel.

Psychotic rampages are indeed a small portion of the ~12,000 homicides a year. They're still a huge amount. The USA's counterparts don't deal with those kind of massacres in part because it's not possible. And it's not possible because the kind of assault weapons capable of killing dozens of people in a short time aren't accessible.

I should point out I've been inconsistent on my statistics so allow me to clarify. ~12,000 people are murdered with guns a year. Deaths caused by guns accidental or deliberate total ~32,000

This "But it's the gangs" is a myth. It's true gang violence is a big contributor to that number and should not be taken lightly but it has dropped significantly from its high in the 90's. So it's false to attribute that as the sole issue. This is why there can't be a reasonable discussion because the potential for it is so poisoned. Part by misinformation, part by gun zealots, and part by the circle jerk of "freedom" lovers who no matter the cost believe government cannot do anything and must be gutted.

Hello, Community!

As has been stated previously, banning guns will only hurt those who purchase firearms legally. Less than 1% of gun-related crimes committed in the US last year were done with legally purchased weapons.

I am, however, for stricter gun laws in the sense that anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm should be made to do a much STRICTER background check than the ones currently in place, take a safety course, and obtain a license--concealed or not. And perhaps obtaining semi-automatic weapons should be a higher class license similar to the way obtaining military-grade weapons requires a class 3 license here in the US.

Let's look at motor vehicles in comparison. They are the number one killing machines in the United States and nearly everyone of age has one (excluding residents in major urban areas who utilize public transportation. In order to obtain a car, you need a valid drivers license and to pass a safety course, proving that you can safely operate a motor vehicle.

Will this prevent shootings? No. Just like obtaining a driver's license doesn't prevent accidents. Last year, there were over 32,000 motorized vehicle related deaths in the US as opposed to the just over 10,000 gun related deaths. Cars are far worse, yet I see no attempt at trying to do something about them in terms of having stronger roadway enforcement.

However, at the very least we would know that everyone who legally owned a firearm knew how to properly use it and the consequences of misuse. Perhaps proper civilian training could even help prevent incidents such as last week's shooting in the future.

Banning guns completely? No. Properly educating those who have them? Yes. Making it more difficult to obtain weapons other than shotguns, rifles, and revolvers (lower round capacity)? Yes.

Look, I'm not some ignorant guy that runs around thinking guns are great things but the right to own a weapon shouldn't be taken away and if it is it will cause WAY more trouble than good for at least a decade. When you have a nation with more than 300,000,000 people in it and you see a number such as 9,000 ( which I believe is more than the number for this year or last year), it isn't a huge issue. I would like to hear a straight up report on how many of them were related to drugs or gangs.

I'm not even talking about their stance on this issue. They could be in support of the NRA and I'd still call them out for being the worthless scum that they are.

There is virtually no group of people more immoral and worthless than Hollywood. Their opinion means absolutely nothing, nor the hypocritical bull-blam!- (e.g. make violent movies, yet oppose guns) they spout.

You're going to say, after the mass slaughter of innocent children, that "it isn't a huge issue". Wow. Guess it's hard for me to argue with you when you don't even acknowledge a serious problem.

Which, yes, they are. Gun violence is big in the US and that's taking population into account. I don't have the exact number on gang related deaths. There probably isn't an exact number and just more of an estimate. I can say gang violence peaked in the 90's and has since gone downhill due to crackdowns on illegal firearms and higher incarceration rates. There's also a more controversial theory by the economist Stephen Levitt that Roe v. Wade has been a major factor in reduced crime rates because of fewer unwanted children but that's an entire discussion on its own.

The NRA isn't even that bad (especially compared to groups like Hollywood). Admittedly, they can be a little overboard, but the fact of the matter is that most of these events are caused by problems unrelated to guns. The Sandy Hook massacre was done by a psycho who stole the weapon.

All I'm saying is that guns, per se, don't kill people. It's the people pulling the trigger, who do. And, if we want to prevent these kinds of shootings, we need to eliminate the people pulling the trigger.

By removing guns, we're essentially taking ibuprofen to lower blood pressure: We're stopping the symptoms while ignoring the problem.
