Not really. Your mom is over quite enough to make my fears mute.

Being alone. You're a mod, you should be used to that.

30,000 people in 8 square miles isn't a lightly populated town, on top of that it is within a county that has 700,000 people. Also, me hearing or not hearing gunshots is quite relevant, I've never heard a gunshot other than at the range or something similar. It is VERY relevant because people like you fail to take into account the vast majority of gunshot victims were tied in with drugs, gangs, or other similar activities. You rarely hear of people walking around killing people for fun, when that happens it is the top story across almost every news channel.
Psychotic rampages are indeed a small portion of the ~12,000 homicides a year. They're still a huge amount. The USA's counterparts don't deal with those kind of massacres in part because it's not possible. And it's not possible because the kind of assault weapons capable of killing dozens of people in a short time aren't accessible.
I should point out I've been inconsistent on my statistics so allow me to clarify. ~12,000 people are murdered with guns a year. Deaths caused by guns accidental or deliberate total ~34,000
This "But it's the gangs" is a myth. It's true gang violence is a big contributor to that number and should not be taken lightly but it has dropped significantly from its high in the 90's. So it's false to attribute that as the sole issue. This is why there can't be a reasonable discussion because the potential for it is so poisoned. Part by misinformation, part by gun zealots, and part by the circle jerk of "freedom" lovers who no matter the cost believe government cannot do anything and must be gutted. Look, I'm not some ignorant guy that runs around thinking guns are great things but the right to own a weapon shouldn't be taken away and if it is it will cause WAY more trouble than good for at least a decade. When you have a nation with more than 300,000,000 people in it and you see a number such as 9,000 ( which I believe is more than the number for this year or last year), it isn't a huge issue. I would like to hear a straight up report on how many of them were related to drugs or gangs.
