Less than 1% of gun-related crimes committed in the US last year were done with legally purchased weapons.
I find this incredibly hard to believe.
How many of those were once legally owned? I'd wager the figure's much higher.

AT LAST! Someone read my post! :-D Now read the rest of it, and thanks for your input :)

To me, it sounds like those who are for the total banning of firearms have never fallen victim to r*pe, a mugging, or a home invasion.

What are the chances of that happening and do you really need several assault rifles to prevent those things? What's to stop the robber/rapist having a gun? Will it be about who has the better gun or who is better trained?

  • 12.22.2012 1:16 PM PDT

Since America treats celebrities like kings and queens they're probably going to listen to them.

I read all of it. I only felt need to offer an observation on part of it. The rest I feel neither here nor there on.

To answer your previous question, I have no idea how we'd manage to obtain all of those statistics unless the firearms were always recovered.

That said, the main purpose in owning a stolen gun (usually more expensive than purchasing it legally, by the way), is to make it harder to trace.

He stole it from a legal carrier, his mother. Most criminals obtain their guns illegally. All you're doing is preventing legal carriers from protecting themselves by making the laws stricter.

Wouldn't a handgun be enough for you to defend yourself? And if there's no gun laws, what's to stop the other guy having a huge assault rifle anyway?

Gun control is not the issue here. Even if we ban every gun ever, bad people are still going to get their hands on them. They don't follow legal procedures to obtain their weapons. Why don't people understand that? Stricter gun control is only going to hurt the responsible carriers.

I kind of agree. Yes, anyone who wants to kill people will find a way, usually with an equal or greater rate of success than with a gun. Yes, it's virtually impossible to completely bring guns out of circulation. Yes, the second amendment which allows civilians to be equally as armed as any potential tyrants is an important one and should be adhered to. However, I do believe in background checks, psyche evaluations, and waiting periods, to prevent crimes of passion. Gun control is different from banning guns.
Also, I want to complain about Lanza's mother briefly. To have your child institutionalized while still letting your kid have any clue where your firearms are or how to use them, let alone bringing them to a gun range, is terrible parenting.

As has been stated previously, banning guns will only hurt those who purchase firearms legally. Less than 1% of gun-related crimes committed in the US last year were done with legally purchased weapons.

I am, however, for stricter gun laws in the sense that anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm should be made to do a much STRICTER background check than the ones currently in place, take a safety course, and obtain a license--concealed or not. And perhaps obtaining semi-automatic weapons should be a higher class license similar to the way obtaining military-grade weapons requires a class 3 license here in the US.

Let's look at motor vehicles in comparison. They are the number one killing machines in the United States and nearly everyone of age has one (excluding residents in major urban areas who utilize public transportation. In order to obtain a car, you need a valid drivers license and to pass a safety course, proving that you can safely operate a motor vehicle.

Will this prevent shootings? No. Just like obtaining a driver's license doesn't prevent accidents. Last year, there were over 32,000 motorized vehicle related deaths in the US as opposed to the just over 10,000 gun related deaths. Cars are far worse, yet I see no attempt at trying to do something about them in terms of having stronger roadway enforcement.

However, at the very least we would know that everyone who legally owned a firearm knew how to properly use it and the consequences of misuse. Perhaps proper civilian training could even help prevent incidents such as last week's shooting in the future.

Banning guns completely? No. Properly educating those who have them? Yes. Making it more difficult to obtain weapons other than shotguns, rifles, and revolvers (lower round capacity)? Yes.

The difference between cars and guns is that people actually need cars, they are actually useful. Guns, even hand guns, are useless. How many crimes have been stopped by the owner having a hand gun? Couldnt a person have a knife or learn self protection or even have s panic button? is gettin into a gunfight really the best solution? And can I have a source on the one percent statistic. Although 3/4 of gun owners have more than one gun, so it may be criminals are just buying more than regular people.

It's kind of funny, too, how people act like random shootings are the only occurrence of gun violence. It's as if one particular type of event (that's caused by problems far deeper than ownership of guns) gives reason to outlaw everything.

In some places, it is the ONLY solution. A knife isn't going to stop an armed assailant. Pepper spray may or may not work depending on the range and the subject's immunity factor, and tasers are useless against thick clothing.

Guns are also a utility. Some folks use them to hunt, while others are a means of self defense. However you want to look at it, both can be used lethally either intentionally or unintentionally.

More on defensive weapons.

PS: The NRA guys suck, how can you defend guns after the killing of 20 kids??

Because someone could easily have come in and bashed their heads in with a brick.

Or put drugs into the ketchup dispenser in the lunchroom.

Or drove a vehicle through the wall and straight into the classroom.

Or brought a knife in and started cutting them.

The list goes on and on and on bud. GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.
Implying any of that can kill people on the scale a gun can.

Whip up a molotov cocktail or some homemade explosives and there you go.

Dating Age

For those looking to vent, get proper advice, or give it to those in need.

So I'll jump back into this debate. There are easy solutions to the abnormally high gun related homicides in the United States. These aren't even radical ideas. 1) Reinstate complete ban on assault weapons. 2) Ban gun sales at gun shows that use legal loopholes to avoid background checks. These two look like laws that will become a reality.

But it needs to go further. 3) Much tighter regulation on hand gun sales. 4) Tighter regularion on ammo sales. 5) Moral suasion of the state to make irresponsible gun ownership the equivalent of smoking around your children.

Addressing the mental health issue and impoverished areas where there are high gun related homicides are much more complex. There's also the need to stop the fetishization of firearms.

It's not about banning guns outright. It's the need for the American collective to take off their blinders so they can see how their counterparts successfully address gun control.
