Subject: Do better graphics make a game more fun to play?

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

I was thinking about this while playing a little Chrono Trigger on my phone. For me at least, games were more fun when gameplay was emphasized over graphics. In my opinion, games today focus too much on graphics and less on gameplay and story.

I do not want to stop asking. I do not ask to stop wanting.

Actually, I'd argue yes. At least for me, because immersion and story are probably what I value most in games, and a fantastic graphical or artistic presentation can really leave an impression on me.

Substance?

I'm hated by many, but loved by none.

If Call of duty has minecraft graphics would you still play it?

Agreed. Nowadays it's all about flare and not about substance.

Games have always put a lot of attention on graphics. Honestly, they have.

the will to win is the will to destroy

not really but they do help when it comes to immersion

Don't LOL if you aren't L'inOL.

Halo: Reach
Halo 3
Halo ODST

Nothing wrong with having good graphics, but I do agree with you, games focus too much on graphics than on the actual gameplay.

It depends. I enjoy games like the Elder Scrolls or Dark Souls mostly because of the gameplay, but I also like the graphics, and it certainly makes me feel more immersed.

But I don't mind in 2D games, graphics don't matter to me in that case, so long as you don't look like one giant pixel moving across the screen.

Depends on what game.

  • 12.22.2012 3:13 PM PDT

Yes, the IMPROVE the game, but they aren't the priority.

  • 12.22.2012 3:13 PM PDT

I would have said yes....that is until I played Battlefield 3.

Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

Better graphics can improve atmosphere, and atmosphere can make a game more fun to play. Otherwise...ehhh. I still play Age of Empires/Age of Mythology, and they're not exactly graphics-intensive.

It can improve the game and make it more fun to play but I would play most games regardless of graphics (To a certain extent)

  • 12.22.2012 3:14 PM PDT

Yes because it wooks pweety

OK, but Super Mario Bros had atrocious graphics by today's standards. Yet, many gamers still find this a fun game to pass the time.

You had 2 buttons, and a 4 button directional pad. That's it.

Yet, SMB and games like it, made do with that and focused on game play mechanics over the graphics.

It seems today we get caught up in the specs of gaming. Refresh rates, DPI etc...

And what does that get us? Maybe we should be less concerned about the graphics, and more with the gameplay.

♠The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's friend's enemy♠

I care more about art-style and how they're presented.

  • 12.22.2012 3:22 PM PDT

No, I don't care if it looks nice. Oot didn't have the best graphics but I enjoy it more than any game and replay it once and a while. I like to compare San Andreas and gta4 gta 4 has better graphics no doubt but I didn't even finish a play through. TO each their own just my preference.

Definitely. A game that looks good has a much easier time keeping my attention and keeping me entertained.

I can agree with this, a lot.

But in the case of all these new games that are based more on multiplayer then it doesnt bother me at all, minecraft would be an example of the multiplayer based game and i suppose rpgs like skyrim would be examples of games which need good graphics.

im fully aware that i worded that paragraph pretty horribly, i'm not illiterate, im just a little lazy and cant really think straight right now.

it's fine I'm sure most don't care about grammar. I do agree with the skyrim comment though. Games like those it's almost expected they should have good graphics.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

Aesthetics yes. Graphics, no.
