Subject: Do better graphics make a game more fun to play?

I agree. Graphics have never been important to me; I have just as much fun playing games like Doom and Morrowind as I have playing modern games with state of the art graphics.

Also, I think that aesthetically pleasing games don't necessarily have to have "good" or realistic graphics. It's about what you create with the materials at hand, not so much the materials themselves.

No, unless it is so bad it actually hurts to look at.

It can draw you in more. Which contributes to it's immersiveness and sense of wonder. So, sure it can help me enjoy the game more.

Currently studying Computer Science & Software engineering. Hope to work on mobile devices of the future! When a certain game's credits roll, look out for my name! ;)

You will -blam!- bricks when you see what game it is! =)

Skyrim practically has minecraft graphics, and people still find it fun.

It helps with immersion.

When I play Daggerfall, I don't feel immersed at all and it leaves it with something missing.

Good gameplay can make up for atrocious graphics. Good graphics doesn't mean dog poo if the game plays like, well, dog poo.

Good graphics don't make a game more fun to play, it only makes it easier on the eyes.

Graphics do good for helping me immerse into the game. Showing how well it emphasis its artistic clique helps me feel the story and atmosphere much more easily. Like Metro 2033, for example, which excels with gorgeous lighting.

OT: it depends, like they help bring the game to greatness and can often help certain aspects of the game

Pure Insanity
The point of war is not to die for one's clan, but it's to make the other bastard die for his
Right before you die, there is always a chance to save yourself, sieze that chance and live to fight another day
The best way to kill someone is to fight them with the same weapons they use and make them know you are better than them, not because of superior weaponry, but because of superior skill.
Hidden in the shadows, Clothed in camo, Armed to the teeth. Hunting.

They can, but not necessarily.

graphics make a generally better experience. Although fantastic graphics will never compensate for a naturally horrible game.

They improve immersion and slightly increase game play quality by being able to see stuff in higher detail.

Yes. Couldn't play Halo CE for more than 2 levels before getting bored. Played Halo CEA nonstop for about a month.

Games have always put a lot of attention on graphics. Honestly, they have.

  • 12.22.2012 8:27 PM PDT

Red vs Blue Fan. Doc is the best!

Graphics make games much better for me, but I don't think they should emphasize it over gameplay or story.

Dolphins, man. Dolphins. They are gonna take over the world, and kill us all, man! THEY'LL KILL US ALL! Oh no, they will start with Gondile. Haha, hell if they are gettin' me! No way man, I'll kill 'em. I'll kill them all!!!

This depends all on the category. FPS? Give me Crysis, Give me Duke Nukem 3D, it makes zero difference to me. Point n' Click? If it's -blam!- graphics I can't tolerate it, because that's literally what I'm looking at the entire time.

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

Graphics do not make the game more fun -that's the gameplay's job. However, graphics are an incredibly important asset to any good video game, not only for presentation but in order to hook the players in and keep them around long enough to experience the engine for what it's for. Because even if you somehow made the perfect gaming formula, if you don't have enough flare or lighting to garner a onlooker's interest, your game just won't sell.

I remember trying Morrowind for the first five minutes and I just had to put it down. I couldn't stand the graphics, that's it. Everyone looked so muddy, wrong and just off (Argonians looked like rats). It just didn't engage me. A handful of Floodians here say Morrowind was the best entry in the series but I could never experience the game for what it was.

In short, no. Graphics do not make a game more fun; graphics make games more approachable.

Lt. Dan I brought you some ice cream. Lt. Dan.. ice creaaam!

Its games like minecraft and that type of mentality that's holding back the evolution of better looking games.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

They make 'em pretty.

BTW Elites rule!

And I am probably just trolling you right now....especially if it is a controversial thread

I would say that they make a game more fun, but it is not like they do so drastically.

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

Ya, games have started prioritizing immersion in general over gameplay. I think being immersed in a nice looking environment is nice, but its often hard to enjoy when gameplay mechanics are stuck in the past.

Vaporeon are highly adapted to aquatic life. Unlike its pre-evolution, it has the ability to breathe underwater. As stated previously, they have a unique molecular structure. They have the ability to "melt" into a body of water and disappear completely from view. They can also manipulate water molecules, giving them the ability to learn Water-type attacks their previous evolutions could not.

Seeing as my last played games are Morrowind, FTL, and To the Moon I'm going to say no.

Graphics are required to a certain point.

I still have my Halo CE PC CD. Played it a while back to refresh myself about the campaign. The graphics where horrible to watch.

Not every game needs Crysis level graphics. TF2 is a great looking game. But there is a bar for entry.

  • 12.22.2012 8:33 PM PDT

More fun? No.
More enjoyable? Depends.
I'd argue aesthetics > graphics.

Better graphics = extra background noise, cluttered level tops, hard to find dropped weapons, low draw distance/rendering, non-solid out of map *looks at Halo 4*

Lockout vs. Blackout, there's no distracting elements in the former.

CE T&R vs. CEA T&R and Nightfall, the latter has tall grass in a lot of locations, impeding sniping.

CE Silent Cartographer vs. CEA Silent Cartographer, you can barely navigate on top of the island...

Halo 4 Requiem, level top is a disaster. Fighting the sniper Elites from some positions is made frustrating due to the tall grass.
