Graphics don't matter to me at all, I still play my damn SNES and I prefer a lot of those games over games that are out now. BUT graphics that make a game visually pleasing definitely will make you have a bigger appreciation for it. But I don't care how "real" the game looks, its more the style. For example: Minecraft has pathetic graphics, but it's not meant to look realistic, but the style and overall feel that the game gives you when you set your eyes on it is amazing. Same with Borderlands, the graphics aren't amazing, but the style it has is visually pleasing and makes the game feel that much better. I agree with OP though, sometimes I feel graphics are the main focus of some games and that really disappoints me (unless the game plays like Heavy Rain, then in that case it almost needs to look beautiful to keep you playing).
