What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

My parents and almost a lot of other people seem to think computer science is a bad thing to get into. I get constantly pounded with, "It is hard to get into!" "There aren't any jobs for it!" and my favorite one, "Millions of people are going into it good luck trying to find a job!"

I plan on going to get my BA in computer science and I get people just mocking and laughing at me saying it is a dead end job and a waste of time. Keep in mind, I plan on going into the video game industry, I also know the requirements and what is expected. What do you guys think? Is getting a degree in Computer Science a waste of time?

Not really. Your mom is over quite enough to make my fears mute.

Being alone.
You're a mod, you should be used to that.

Just ignore them because they probably think getting a degree in marketing or business will get your further. CompSci is a growing market and is one of the best out there right now.

I make $10 an hour helping my school's computer teachers in the summer.

Ignore what those idiots say about it.

Whoever is telling you that is an idiot... Its a well known fact that fields in computer science are where all the jobs are at. Computers, Business, and Engineers.

no it's "its got to go" you wouldn't say the "it is got to go" would you?

Computer Science changes constantly. What you learned in College might not necessarily be useful in a career.

My parents constantly think that a computer science degree basically means I will be fixing up computers in some shop in some random city (and they already have a low opinion of people who work on computers).

I ignore their comments and so far my pursuit of a computer science degree has lead to many great job/research opportunities (many of which I'm taking advantage of right now). I'm sure the same would be true for you as well.

I agree that all presidents should serve 2 terms. 1 in office and 1 in prison

Yeah pretty much.

There are about 10 of these positions open at my place of employment

So what's the difference between a computer engineer and computer scientist?

I've got a fan!

It's not a bad field if you don't mind months or years of sitting in a cubicle crunching Java all day, probably on a contract (meaning you aren't permanently hired) before you get anywhere with some upward potential.

This economy is not good for CS's. My girlfriend's dad is a highly qualified CS, extremely apt for coding and has done it for a dozen years with experience in various companies and languages, and he's currently on a contract with Intel writing code all day.

A lot of degrees and diplomas are a waste of time. Why don't you try to get intO contact with some who have already graduated?

While the first part is true, the foundation laid by your studies should be enough to help you learn the new technology. Much of college is about teaching you how to adjust and grow in your field, not just how to use the most current piece of technology.

I made my user name back when I was little. I go by RandomJPG now. Please don't reference my username.

Have you ever actually done programming before OP? Too many people think that just because they like computers they will like computer science. Computer science has little to do with actual computers. It's more about computing and data.

I never heard anyone say this. It's one of the fastest growing careers. It's really hard to do, and make sure you LOVE calculus.

It's more discrete math and linear algebra than just calculus. You need a calculus base, but it's not very heavy on calculus besides the basics (varying on what area you plan to go into).
