Actually, no. What makes something offensive is if someone is offended by it.

But offence is subjective, people can be offended by things that aren't meant to be offensive.

Saying that LGBT should have the same rights as others (which I support 110%) can be offensive to extremely religious old-school people.
Oh, come on. Seriously?

Do we really need to clarify that if your point of view offends someone who has a vested interest in denying people equality because your point of view promotes equality, the fault is with the guy who wants a subsection of the population to be treated like second-class citizens? Really?

Also, do I even need to say that using the n-word is always bigoted, no matter what the context, unless you are an actual black person using it?
LOLnope. I agree when it's used to refer to a specific person as a term of endearment, but when mentioning it as a word that exists that happens to rhyme with bigger, if someone called me out on the spot for being a racist I would laugh at them for a good thirty seconds to a minute.
Well, you could laugh at them for calling you racist, but you would still be racist.

Bigots laugh at people who call them bigots all the time. They're still bigots.
But, you see, I'm not a racist. I have no problem with black people, have black friends, and deplore the ideals and opinions of Pennsyltucky racists in my school.

eep
That seems odd to me
Can I use that word in a non-offensive context, without being racist? I believe so. I choose not to use it but I don't believe the color of my skin determines whether my words are racist or not; rather, the intention behind my words is what determines if they are racist.
I have both white/black friends that use the term 'inoffensively'.

Sorry for the off topic.

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

That wasn't the point, I'm saying that people can be offended by various things, even the most rational of things.

Apparently spelling is not the regard that you're referring toPosted by: Direct Control
You can walk around with your chest puffed out championing your progressive beliefs and how "equal" you are but you're not fooling me. So cry and pout all you want and desperately try to justify your position (hurr hurr hurr look at me and my moral/intellectual superiority) but try not to act like you're not simply sucking yourself off because of the hard on you get when you look in the mirror.
You know what I find amusing? The fact that all this was just me asking for you to provide proof of your argument.

If someone says "Hey, what rhymes with bigger?" and I say the n-word, that doesn't make me a bigot
It does
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55
If a teacher gives my class a lot of homework, and I call that homework super [g-word], that doesn't make me a homophobe.
It does
The fact is that these words have connotations which imply that those people are lesser than others, particularly the one with your teacher.

Not to mention, as an African Australian I find that offensive
Good for you. The problem is I have absolutely not problem with -blam!--blam!-s or black people. So your point is dead on arrival.
Yes, but using racist or homophobic words implies that you do, try again

Well, you can believe that as much as you like, but I believe it's up to the people to whom that term refers in an incredibly derogatory way to decide whether or not you, a white person unaffected by discrimination against black people, can use that word in a "non-offensive context".

Sorry.

Shaka's a med student, bro. Wanna bet that he's not smarter than you?

I'm offended you would call me "bro". I'm not your brother, in fact my only brother killed himself four years ago, and the fact that you would try and act like you are filling in his shoes? That's disgusting. I hope you're ashamed.

You realise that what decides whether or not you're a bigot is not you repeatedly saying "I'm not a bigot", right? What decides it is whether or not you choose to say or do bigoted things, and whether or not you change your behaviour when it's pointed out to you that a thing you may have been doing unintentionally is bigoted.

I can go and say "I'm not a homophobe!" all I like, but if I go and vote against same sex marriage the next day, I'm still a homophobe.

Because being a brother is not a mutual affiliation? Last time I checked you can't be my brother without me being your brother as well. If she wants to call me her brother that assumes we are family, and if she happens to be a women, a fact I don't particularly care about, I am still offended that she would refer to me as bro. She is not a member of family, and I am not her bro.

Of course you're too 1337 to understand that with your clever little username referencing a mass murderer. Do me a favor, Alt f4 and go to sleep.

That's the thing.

I am for homo-blam!- rights. If my state had ballot initiatives, I would vote for LGBT rights 10 times out of 10. I have zero problem with black people nor any racial, economic, or cultural minority and never have. I'm not just saying I'm not a bigot. My views and ideals hold true to that statement.

Are we going by the actual definition of homophobe?

I hate them, but disapproval would differ from hate or fear of something. Some conservatives disprove of something without actually hating the demographic involved.

That is with the implication that you are in fact actually right. This is just another example of how every single one of you marches around like you're better than those around you. We're all the "wrong" ones, and you all are the "right" ones. Wow, now you're diving the population up into different camps based off their beliefs. That's not very equal, is it?

Now you're just a hypocrite, you claim to dislike bigots when it is clear that you're a bigot yourself without realizing it.

I like how you edited out the portion I addressed that. Now you're using disinformation to further your own views. Furthermore, you actually have the audacity to call me a retard? Last time I checked there are millions of disabled people out there, and you just turned their disability to an insult. More bigotry to be expected.

Please continue to gloat about your moral/intellectual/social superiority to justify how you're better than everyone around you. I might be a bigot, but at least I have the decency to acknowledge it while the rest of you run around assuming your -blam!- doesn't stink. See, now I'm morally superior.

Umm... Have you checked the world around you? Some Black people do it all the time. No one ever accuses them as racist and no one ever thinks that is racist.
