Like anything there are extremists and moderates. Moderate Feminists do want equal rights, and are much less inclined to join a Feminist group. Extremists want to cut dicks off of all guys.

I've been involved with a number of groups with a feminist slant on campus, from womyn's groups to socialists (some of which extend into the broader Melbourne community), and I can assure you that there is no perspective of feminism within any of those groups that sees 'cutting the dicks off of all guys' as a way to achieve gender equality...

Personal experience doesn't mean it isn't like he says elsewhere, you obviously need to get out more. I had a wild feminist come at me with a pair of scissors and a bucket to catch the goods! It was freaking scary!

Don't be so sour. It happened, it really did. I think you're just in denial at this point.

I mean, feminists are just people who want equal rights for women and men alike.
No, modern feminists want women to have more rights than men.
Happens more often than not. They have plenty of rights already.

There's still inequality in the workplace, in the mind.

Women still get paid less than men on average, we still crack jokes telling girls to get back into the kitchen to make us a sandwich.

It's still largely a boys club out there. Possibly due to the nature of the rest of society telling girls that they don't have to be successful or have a deep meaningful personality.

OT: Feminist is a dirty word because radical feminists who want to castrate every man on the planet.
for example, ED, look for the "Biting_Beaver" article. clinically BSI.

Because they are more sexist then men. It's more like they want to screw men instead of equal rights. Equal rights is good, not feminism.

>implying men can't be feminists

You're clearly not familiar with modern feminism.

Gather around the campfire, once it goes out, it's out for good.

Because it's wrongly associated with the stereotype of men hating idiots trying to further their own agenda. You know this and we know you know this.

Honestly, this must be a joke. Child, listen, stop trying to defend yourself because clearly you are incapable of it. The only idiot in this thread is yourself, and trust me, it is obvious. So, how about you do as I asked earlier and log off, mommy and daddy wouldn't want you staying up this late.

Kikashi also isn't familiar with cognition. I assume you have at least half a brain kika, try using it.

There is a really good litmus test to decide whether or not a feminist is sincere in her calls for equality.

Not too long ago, The European Court ruled to end the practice of using gender as one of the factors that car insurance companies could use to determine the insurance rate each person pays. The result is that women's rates went (or will) go up and men will pay slightly less.

What do you think about that?

As long as everyone has to pay based on their driving record, type of car, etc (i.e. factors that make sense as influences on your insurance premiums), sure.

True equality means removing sexist institutions that hurt men, too. It all comes from the same place. If we didn't think men were more violent/aggressive/physical and women were less so, it wouldn't make sense for their premiums to be different, would it? But violent/aggressive/physical is still the positive side of that particular dichotomy. It just happens to have a negative consequence for men in that instance.

The women's rate is going up to match the higher rate of men's.

Seems equal and fair to me, no problems here.

I've been getting into the whole feminist thing pretty considerably recently, but it still irks me that the word describing the whole ideology is centered around a single gender.

I think most people only think of the radicals too when feminism is mentioned, which doesn't help.

We don't call LGBT rights activists "-blam!-ity rights activists", do we? But they obviously want equal rights for people of all -blam!- orientations, not just LGBT people. Same thing.

I understand that, but it's just the representation of the ideologies around a single word that outside observers connote with being one-sided.

So call yourself a social justice advocate? That's a pretty neutral term without the concern troll connotations of "equalist".

The problem with this is that it's really only LGBT (Really? -blam!- is censored? Ugh.) people who are disadvantaged in terms of '-blam!-ity rights'.

Not that I have a problem with the term feminism. I just see it as subversive of 'patriarchy'.

I would say that LGBT discrimination affects straight people who don't act according to heteronormative archetypes - though not nearly to the extent that it affects LGBT people, of course. There's an element of gender discrimination to it as well, because some norms are seen as superior to others by virtue of being more masculine - for example "strong women" are awesome because they're seen as being more like guys, but "sensitive guys" are inferior because they're more feminine.

I wasn't necessarily looking for a new term or complaining about that one, I'm just pointing out that I think people declare themselves as feminists without explaining exactly what they stand for to others.
