We don't call LGBT rights activists "-blam!-ity rights activists", do we? But they obviously want equal rights for people of all -blam!- orientations, not just LGBT people. Same thing.

The problem with this is that it's really only LGBT (Really? -blam!- is censored? Ugh.) people who are disadvantaged in terms of '-blam!-ity rights'.

Not that I have a problem with the term feminism. I just see it as subversive of 'patriarchy'.
I would say that LGBT discrimination affects straight people who don't act according to heteronormative archetypes - though not nearly to the extent that it affects LGBT people, of course. There's an element of gender discrimination to it as well, because some norms are seen as superior to others by virtue of being more masculine - for example "strong women" are awesome because they're seen as being more like guys, but "sensitive guys" are inferior because they're more feminine.
Quoting myself to add that male gaze means the objectification and quasi-acceptance of women who have sex with women because it's "hot" to watch, whereas men who have sex with men are doubly denigrated because they don't excite the male gaze at all.

You're right, but I atill don't think the circumstances can really be equated with those present in gender politics.

I think strength in women is seen as threatening more than it is good due to it being 'masculine', which is part of why there's the idea of strong women being -blam!-s, or vice versa, as if they're stealing women. I've heard plenty of guys talk about how they find it intimidating when women excel at typically male dominated fields, like mathematics, too.

But, yeah, feminism and LGBT rights definitely aren't unrelated.

I wasn't necessarily looking for a new term or complaining about that one, I'm just pointing out that I think people declare themselves as feminists without explaining exactly what they stand for to others.

Explaining exactly what you stand for would be really time consuming to do frequently.

I see what you're saying. I meant more that media creators seek to mollify social justice advocates by creating "strong women" who are really just heavily masculinised women, just as devoid of depth as feminine archetypes are, and such characters are meant to be seen as superior to "sensitive guy" characters, who are generally just laughing-stocks.

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

Though the morrow may be barren of promises, nothing shall forstall my return.

I can't cite radicals like you've asked, but you have to realize they are out there and that is why feminism gets such a bad name. Most women that go radical call themselves feminists, but are really just women who want more rights. There are feminists out there who are truly for equality, and those are the ones I support. However, ones who try to get their jobs to pay for their birth control or some such nonesense give the rest of you a bad name. THAT is why people talk down on you guys. Some people just don't realize that there is a difference between radicals and true feminists. Just like there is a difference between Christians and people like West Boro Baptist Church. Just because some go crazy, doesn't mean we are all the same, but some just don't care to look past the crazies.

What exactly is wrong with health insurance covering birth control, if I may ask? In Australia, it's subsidised under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme just like a lot of other medications. I can pick up a four month supply of my birth control pill for under $20 thanks to the PBS.

You know that's in the context of the workplace providing them with their health care benefits, right? Birth control should absolutely be covered by that.

  • 12.23.2012 8:58 PM PDT

I don't get why something like birth control should even be considered something covered in your benefits. Can you truly convince me that it is something that SHOULD be covered by the work place? Don't get me wrong, my last post wasn't to down on feminists, but rather to point out the fact that there is a large reason why they have a bad name.

Because it's a basic medical issue. Those are exactly the kind of things that should be covered.

Why though? The only reason I can see is from an employer point of view in that I try to keep my workers from getting pregnant so that they can continue to do their job instead of having to take a couple month leave.

It's a basic medical need for a lot of women. Hormonal birth control makes periods less painful, more regular and reduces their other negative side-effects, and is widely used by plenty of women who aren't even having regular sex. In fact, my doctor originally prescribed it for me for that exact reason, before I was ever -blam!-ly active.

Are you not familiar with the practice of employers providing health care coverage for their employees?

I'm sorry, I think I'm just going to leave this thread. I'm too tired to continuously be patronized for every little sentence. Btw, OP this is not directed at you. Best luck with your thread.

Mine was a genuine question, by the way. I'm sorry if it was patronising, because I didn't mean it to be.

I am assuming direct control.

How could I have possibly known that this thread would be 14 pages long...

As for the OP, as everyone else has said, feminism gets a bad rap because of the vocal minority who stand out for their radical beliefs. As I recall, on a popular imageboard it is not hard to find several images of real people posting things such as refusing to breast feed baby boys because of "gender equality", being able to hit a man but not allowing a man to defend himself, and finally, taking a man's money in a divorce because of men's "disgusting nature". It wouldn't be so bad if those weren't absolutely real posts and that there are people out there like that who do in fact call themselves feminists.

My gamertag is Dustin Nugget, like my name here.

Jay, only half the people here can read, and of the ones who can read, only 2% probably even know what feminism is (as you can see by the posts). I'm not sure if it's worth it.

A lot of those aren't actually real posts, and most of the ones that are don't involve any self-identification as feminists.

True, but I only used those as a reference for easily reproduced examples. In my history, I've met plenty of people, real individuals, out and about who believe those exact same things. They do identify themselves as feminists and their beliefs are extremely radical in nature. I can't produce evidence as they are only in my memories, but then again I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, simply providing a basis for my beliefs. Unfortunately, those encounters have happened, and plenty of times to boot, and this has given me a natural predisposition against feminists.

Do you not realise that those posts are obvious trolls? Really?
The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

Key

Because most so-called "feminists" go past equality and attempt to get social and cultural reparations for their oppression. If you want to be equal, have at it. If you want payback/revenge (as many so-called "feminists" I've seen do), nope, sorry, I'm going to ridicule you.
