I've noticed in current day gaming, when you press jump you just sort of sail up without any sort of prep or getting ready for the leap. One game that comes to mind is halo, in which you just sail up into the air with no lifting done by the spartan's legs.

Do you think jumping will ever be really realistic, or are you happy with the current acceptable break from reality that is video game jumping?

Discuss.

The Uncharted Games come to mind.

I miss double-jumping, doing backflips and frontflips like in Ratchet And Clank.

HALL OF SHAME

Everything I have ever said.

Not enough space, soooooo

Assassin's creed is pretty realistic looking with jumps.

ooga booga boooh

Depends on the game you are playing, too. Some games have a limited jump option. Remember Mirror's Edge system? Damn, that was good!

If I wanted realistic, I'd try out for gymnastics.

The low jump just kills replayability.

I.e. get outside of a campaign map in Halo 4. It's extremely complex to roam up there because you have to memorize where the holes are and you have to do some careful jumping so you don't fall off. Many rocks are slippery. Hell, the out of map at the Forerunner structure investigate objective on Requiem is just horrible. You can easily slide off.

In CE, after doing the bridge jump, I would bring a Scorpion, Ghosts, a few Banshees, and the Hog so I could play out the outdoor battle differently. It was possible to get 4 extra marines if you did the bridge jump... and a second Hog. You could even move the marines to safety with the Scorpion so you could have that battle all to yourself.

In Halo 3, I would exit Sierra 117 right before the dam, set up blockades (particularly to keep invincible Arby and Johnson out of the way), move weapons around, move scenery around, move the bridge Phantom into the cutscene, etc.

There's nothing like that in Halo 4 Solo gameplay. Out of map is just useful for skipping huge sections of the level.

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

I jump just fine without running or prep.

I wouldn't want my view to lower, then suddenly burst upwards all while my screen shakes back and forth vigorously. I'd quickly get sick of that.

Honestly OP I am just happy to be able to jump in some games that I don't care how they do it. Hell have you played a game where you can't just a one foot high wall so you have to walk all the way around it? Trust me it isn't fun.

I never said 'no jumping', I was talking about how you just sort of float up in most games. I think jumping should be a thing that requires precise planning and timing like it does in real life. It adds an interesting thing to the gameplay (those of you who played the old prince of Persia know what I am talking about)

I know what you are talking about. I am just saying don't -blam!- about something that can easily not be included. Though I do agree more precise jumping could be nice, but there are platformers and there are shooters. Sometimes they are put together other times it is best to not have them in the same genre since that distracts from the purpose of the game.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Realistic jumping makes for awful, awful gameplay. It's akin to the older platformers with the horrid jumping controls.
