People putting H3 near the top.
Oh god, my sides.
3 did a lot of good things, but people are very much blinded by nostalgia when it comes to that game. The campaign offered some of the best battles with lots of variety, but like many other games in the series it misses the point of what makes Halo campaigns so memorable - the large, expansive battlegrounds and vistas. This effect is totally lost when you're just meandering through linear corridors, a problem Halo 4 had in the last 2 missions, as well as Halo CE, Reach and 3 at points.
The story was so -blam!- bad for the first 3 hours though, it wasn't until the Flood arrived almost 5 levels in that things started getting good. Earth was a very boring setting in Halo 3 and I never really felt anything was at stake since you only really had one scene where the scale got to you in Tsavo Highway when the cruiser flies over you. Reach, ODST and Halo 4 did a much better job when you start seeing glassing beams smash into the ground and stuff like that.
Multiplayer was great, but it had a lot of issues and still does. Customs were amazing, but there was no Tower of Power which really sucked because half my time in Halo 2 was spent playing that with friends, Forge was a great new addition at the time (it has since been refined into a top-notch feature) and Theatre was at its best in Halo 3.
I'd probably give Halo 3 a decent 7/10.
