Subject: When Do You Think 343 Will Reintroduce The Flood?

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

T4R

As we all know The Flood are an integral part of the Halo Universe, I was surprised that they weren't featured in Halo 4 to be honest.

When do you think we'll see them?

I don't want to see them. I just know they're going to be overpowered.

While it's a good thing that the Flood are fast (compared to those lame Halo 3 Flood), it'll also be a bad thing. CE did it right: start off slow then pick up speed. And berserk.

Halo 2 made them dangerous simply because of how powerful their melee was and how quickly they could catch up to you.

I'm expecting them with the return of the Precursors. Possibly late into Halo 5 if I had to guess.

It's more fun if they are over powered.

Agreed. I loved it when they played possum too. I really hope pure forms don't come back. As for the combat forms, if they can implement ambushes into their tactics, then they would be a better enemy.

We should know better, because we are better.

They will probably reintroduce them as soldiers of the Precursors, if anything. I have no doubt they will be back.

This.

I'd love to see some Promethan vs Flood battles. I'd also like to see how Forerunner weapons fare against the Flood.

But will you eat your hat?

  • 12.23.2012 11:23 AM PDT

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Well, let me put it like this, who/what will we be fighting in Halo 5 and 6? First of all, what factions are there? Let's see if I can list them all:

Precursors
Gravemind
Flood (listed separately since I'm not sure who will be contolling them)
Mendicant Bias
Offencive Bias
The Librarian
Bornstellar
Ur
Faber
The Storm
The ONI...
Mysterious crashed spaceship
Cortana?
Automated Forerunner security systems under a monitor (EX: sentinels under 343GS)

Those were all right?

The two who are already introduced and kind of unresolved are the Storm and the Prometheans. I'm pretty sure they'll introduce something new, since basing a new game on two known enemies would be considered dull by many. But will it be the Flood?

Halo 4 ended back on square one; Chief's again in touch with human forces. Where will it go from here, will Earth or a human colony be attaced, or will the Infinity take the fight somewhere? I'm leaning towards the latter, and that makes it very hard to predict.

There's no ongoing action, so whatever scenario they'll find themselves in, it has to be one where they encounter action pretty fast, there would have to be action of the first mission. That's unless the formula is changed, or if the action starts in another media.

Where will they be going then? Will they find the coordinates for something, will this be when MB and OB are reintroduced, perhaps one or both of them will provide for new enemies?

As it is now we have a lot of factions, a lot. The question is who'll be friend and who will be foe?

Yeah there's not really much to go off right now, though I do remember back in Evolutions it says that as of 2559 the Portal Artefact in Voi is still active and mysteriously drawing power from somewhere (I remember this because I wrote a fanfic about it back in 2010 which very much predicted a number of things that happened in Halo 4 :P).

I like the idea of a dual-narrative with John going on a 'Search for Spock' kind of journey to find Cortana, while the Arbiter tries to unite the Sangheili, humanity and the other Covenant races after learning about the Precursor threat.

There once was an ugly barnacle. He was so ugly that everyone died.

The end.

I immediately started thinking of Stargåte.. In a good way. If the Voi Portal is involved, it might open up for a quick way to reach a new and exciting location, or many of them. Maybe if the ONI learned to control it?
I like the idea of a dual-narrative with John going on a 'Search for Spock' kind of journey to find Cortana, while the Arbiter tries to unite the Sangheili, humanity and the other Covenant races after learning about the Precursor threat.Maybe Halo 5 will be akin to Mendicant Bias and the Great Intragalactic Scavenger Hunt, an adventure that has John and the Infinity travel back and forth, searching for something? I'd love that. (The Didacts search for clues in Cryptum would be a similar scenario too).

If history repeats itself, maybe 5 will be like two, maybe half of the game is seen from Thel's point of view?

But I'm going off topic...
My point is, maybe the Flood will be treated more like a local threat, not part of the core story of the game? They're present at a particular stop on the journey, mix up the action a bit and update their situation, and then be done with for then? An entire game built more like Spartan Ops than a regular Halo game. Some chapters follow S-IV, some John, and some Thel.
Just wild speculation though...

Spartan Ops S2/whichever. There are still holdouts on the Halo rings; once Requiem's secure, I imagine Infinity will resume its mission of finding and securing them.

Oh my Jesus this, this so much!!

Arby was so symbolic while Chief was just there because of his history. Take out the Arby and you get Halo 4, a vain attempt to make Chief a hero.

Offensive was destroyed by Mendicant, therefore, Offensive Bias would be out of the question. Unless he had fragments of himself...

You mean Mendicant was defeated by Offensive?

"Mendicant was able to postpone its inevitable annihilation for [106:S] with its attempt to flee. But the last of its core vessels hangs before me now; crippled and defeated but still sensate. I could spare it; carve out what is left of its [personality construct array] and deliver it to [Installation Zero] for study. I doubt it would have extended the same courtesy to me." ~ Offensive Bias.

Mendicant was the one communicating with Chief on the Ark, at that time at least one part was alive. Software or hardware, and if it was destroyed at the Ark, I do not know.

So whatever happened to Offensive Bias? He's not mentioned anywhere else, to my knowledge. Is he part of the Assembly?

Part of the Assembly.. That would be something.. Can't say really, we know to little at this time.

The short answer is that what happened to OB is still a mystery (one of the main mysteries if you ask me), but we can narrow it down a bit.

Mendicant Bias was not only created to handle Flood affairs, he was made to coordinate all of the Forerunners A.Is, but with him out of the picture, and OB created to take him down, the question remains whether OB was created to--if things went as planned--take over his duties, or whatever? ... If that's the case, OB got a rather dull fate; simply continuing to handle Forerunner business, whatever that is. He was built to have a lot less will of his own, so that he wouldn't be as easily corrupted as MB, so I don't think we should consider scenarios that suggest him having an agenda of his own, not too wild schemes anyway.

I'll have to fine comb the Halo 3 terminals once more with this in mind, to know for sure, but as far as I know he isn't present at that time. His last known location/mission must be the one mentioned in the Terminals. The state of all things Forerunner--the installations we know of were abandoned, left to the monitors and sentinels to maintain--also help emphasise that he's been fairly idle during his masters absence. 343GS was left with installation 04 and Adjutant Reflex with 00 (the latter is a theory).

Did all of the Forerunner go somewhere? At this point it is unlikely; the Librarian says something--don't remember the exact quote though--about her being "the last of the Forerunner", so there's nothing that really ephesises that he might have followed them to a specific place/installation. I'm sure there is such a place though, a new location, a place of action; can't imagine two games to be sett on locations we already know about.

Then we have the Halo 3 era theories/speculations about locations such as Epitaph, the Key ship MB was found in, etc, that shine some light on his last mission. They suggest that he split MB all over the galaxy Osiris style, after the rings were fired and the war over, or that something happened that casued him to lose MB*. None of that helps pinpoint his whereabout nor do they define his agenda/mission post the events from the terminals.

* "I have found the shard that was lost. They brought it back to me. Now my reconstruction cannot be stopped. ~ MB

He's a core character in the story, so I'm pretty sure that he'll be hinted towards in the coming media. Silentium for instance, might continue his story. Strangely enough we know a lot more about MB.

Considering how the Flood have evolved from game to game, (compare Halo CE's Flood who would move slowly and whip the enemy until they died to Halo 4's Flood with talons powerful enough to kill a spartan in one hit,) I'm pretty scared to see how the galaxy would fare against the Flood at that point. Hopefully they don't return.
