Subject: Countries with the greatest literature?

Greek if you want to go all time.

Modern day England is big, but lol @ the complete disregard of America.

Twain, Washington Irving, Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Alan Poe, William Faukner, and Arthur Miller, just to name a few.

It's honestly closer than the Brits would have you think, and weighs more favorably in Americas direction when you consider how long the 2 countries have existed.

I have to agree with this.

I wouldn't.
Literacy as a widespread thing really didn't come into play all that long ago throughout the world.
The advantage really isn't that great.

The Catcher In The Rye was written in America.

America wins.

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

Beowulf, A.D. 1000.

The time advantage is pretty significant.

Because having a doctorate in American literature makes your opinion fact.

I don't see your point.
I said that literacy wasn't widespread until relatively recently.
I'd even go on to say that literacy was incredibly rare for the majority of English history, with the majority of literates being those in the Church, whose interest didn't tend to be the spinning of great tales.
the fact that Beowulf's writing is associated with Royal courts should be a rather big hint.

"It will take many bad things to ruin your day, but it only takes one good thing to make it."

"We have a bond that's stronger than any sports team or extra curricular group on campus........combined. This band is our family."

"Tis but the journey, not the destination."

"And that's my contingency plan. Well, it wouldn't be considered 'contingency' if it happens more than half the time..."

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

What does a population's literacy have to do with the quality of a country's literature?
