Subject: The eagles aren't a plot hole in LotR.

We work in the dark to serve the light.

One does not simply fly into Mordor.

Yeah, that's right. The Fellowship not riding the eagles to Mordor makes perfect sense. Think about it: They's be riding giant friggin' eagles over the Mountains of Shadow, basically straight in front of the Eye of Sauron. That'd be the equivalent of Frodo, upon entering Mordor, walking up to the nearest Orc and handing him a note addressed to Barad-Dur reading, "Hey, Sauron, we've just entered Mordor with your One Ring and are on our way to the Cracks of Doom to destroy it. Don't bother us, 'kay?" On top of that, the Nazgul have flying mounts, and would be on their asses the moment they flew in on those giant eagles.

So, the eagles aren't a plot hole, they never were, and they never will be.

Halo Reach- The Black Sheep of the bunch
Halo 4- Incredible

Did you know that 93% of all statistics on the internet are made up on the spot, and that 68% of readers believe them?

Umm...no. They were major plot holes. Gandalf could've easily cloaked their entry into Mordor.

  • 12.23.2012 2:32 PM PDT

Okay... No one's arguing with you? Or okay maybe they are.

It's pretty flawed logic, though. Like, they just have to, you know, outrun the Nazgul. Then there's plenty of eagles if they need a distraction. And who cares about the Eye of Sauron, it's an eye. AN EYE!

Yup, that's what I always believed too.

The "Eagles are intelligent beings who make their own decisions" is the crappiest explanation I've ever heard.

Against an Eye that sees through basically everything? No.

The eagles are 4-11

  • 12.23.2012 2:34 PM PDT

I think the Nazgul would have seen the eagles and killed them.

If I recall correctly, the Nazguls were on horses in Fellowship so there goes that argument. And your other argument doesn't make any sense. "They can't fly the eagles into Mt. Doom because Sauron will see them." Ok?

  • 12.23.2012 2:35 PM PDT

ok, then why not ride the eagles like, half-way? or even like 90% of the way? boromir wouldn't have died, then.

Check out my youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/ultratog1028

I've always accepted two things. 1. Flying Nazgul mounts. And 2. The Eagles were missing and hadn't reappeared until near the end of the war.

Because the Fellowship was meant to travel secretly. Riding giant eagles across the continent isn't what I'd call secret.

I heard that The Eagles were weakened by the magic of Sauron and couldn't go into Mordor until it was destroyed.

This does actually fit, as in ROTK they remain at The Black Gate until Sauron and Mt Doom are destroyed, then they enter Mordor once the "evil magic" has been dispelled.

I know the Eagles suck... the Triple A would have brought them down way before the could even enter the AO.

They're only prolonging their mission to save the world by walking. But it's ok because they're being secret.

7 Nazgul.

7+ Eagles, probably closer to 300.

I don't see the problem.

Well, since being captured would risk the Ring being taken by the Enemy, I'd say walking beats giant eagles.

Because they had the element of surprise.

Or LotR could stop being such a backward universe and invent some form of flying machine.

Yup, that's what I always believed too.

The "Eagles are intelligent beings who make their own decisions" is the crappiest explanation I've ever heard.

Even though it's the explanation Tolkien himself gave.

So the Great Eagles are intelligent, sentient beings who have business of their own to attend to. How is this a dumb explanation in Tolkien's context?

What business could they possibly have that's more important than the entire fate of Middle Earth?

Derp

Eagles are their own nation, Their own people. If they don't want to do it, thats their right. However LOTR is just terrible.
