Subject: How would the US stop an incoming ICBM?

Last week North Korea launched a missile carrying a satellite into space. The recovered rocket from the previous test before that failed surfaced answers. It was concluded that the rocket could indeed make it to the western United States with it's range 6,200 miles.

Let's say they once again fire a rocket. It's destination? Los Angeles. It was reported in early september of this year that the United States missile defensive system would not be ready in 2012. So, what alternative would there to be if an ICBM was headed for the US to stop it?

Our fleets carry AGS equipped destroyers whose mission it is to intercept missiles such as those. However since it is an ICBM they may not be viable until it gets closer.

Next line of defense is to try and shoot it out of the air with planes (as weird as that sounds).

Final phase i would believe is the patriot anti missile defense system, which we should have not sure why it says we aren't ready...

Obviously take what i said here with a grain of salt but we aren't defenseless.

...It would be shot down.

That would be a pretty long ball possibility.

Although, since it is North Korean, it would probably remain in atmosphere.

I've seen path projections and it doesn't re-enter until above ground. The question is how long would it take.

So that's how it is. You all ought to know better than that.

Surely we have something capable of stopping an ICBM. People have worked on this for about 60 years. I'm sure we have some sort of missile capable of taking things out in the upper atmosphere.

If all else fails, and the ICBM hits, the United States would be within its right to use its vast second strike capabilities. North Korea would be toast.

They shoot it down with a special type of missile built to take down ICBM's, why build something and not have a counter?

Incase your unaware NATO is building a missile shield to prevent nukes being launched at Europe, so those missiles will take down any nukes.

At what point on the journey do you think that would happen?

Imagine if the government did, people would just exploit it. Telling us everything would put the US in danger.

So the "most powerful nation on earth" which by the way is equipped with the most disciplined and powerful military doesn't have enough weapons to defends itself from a foreign country?

Stupid.

Precisely. There would be no more North Korea.

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

They would probably be able to take down a single missile.

Then North Korea would be completely and totally destroyed.

I read that as a matter of fact sort of answer. How do you stop a flying object? Shoot it until it stops flying.

The US has shot a satellite out of the sky along with many other precision shots, what makes this so unlikely? Of course there would be the fallout of it and everything, but what makes you think it couldn't be shot down?

And there ya go.

In America, they have this thing called the MIM-104 Patriot.

It shoots down missiles, you see.
