Over 100 people were killed in shootings in the US in the space of just a week after the Newtown massacre.

That's still an incredibly low number when compared to how else we die. These things are just an anomaly.

The death rate by firearms is insanly high compared to other western countries. Where it may have 5 times the population, firearm fatalities and crimes are hundreds of times higher.

A small town might have almost no crimes committed in a year, but still have a higher crime rate per person than a city, in this case the reverse is sadly true and lax gun laws are the leading factor.

And? Gun violence is such a problem here because of our borders and terrible drug laws, not because of guns themselves. History has shown gun regulations only make EVERYTHING (Even gun crimes) worse. People that want to kill are going to kill, and they have more confidence to do so when they know their victim doesn't have the ability to protect themselves and establish control of the situation.

Then why is the firearm crime rate in the only country I know of that constitutonaly allows its citizens to carry weapons the highest in any first world country? If the people are all defended, then why is it so? Why has Australia had no notable gun crimes since reforms after the (mcqarry?) Massacre?

I don't advocate getting rid of all guns, just better tracking, training, storage and checks. Gun ownership in itself is as harmless as car ownership, but crimes involving cars goes up relative to their availability. Guns enable criminals and nutters, where they might kill a person with a knife, they can kill dozens with a gun. Killers will kill, but as in all things, having access to better tools makes your job easier.

3200 innocent humans are killed through abortion each day. That doesn't make these deaths any less tragic though

Every 3 seconds a child dies. Together they make a decent beat.

What has this got to do with gun laws and media coverage of masacres? Nothing at all.

Because of drug cartels and a black market and it's very easy to get guns into this country. You're missing a lot of variables, Australia saw a decrease in gun crime but an increase in all other crimes and even homicide, because there were less people to defend against crime. Why is it when D.C. and Chicago struck down strict gun laws they had a drop in murder rates, crime rates, and yes, even GUN CRIME rates. The problem is the person's disturbed mind, not the gun. They could easily chew on a tooth brush for thirty seconds and stab you if they really wanted you dead, the difference now being is you have less of a chance to defend yourself.

The more I say Chang the more asian it sounds.

Imagine if you're one of those parents whose kid got killed from that.

Imagine knowing that you may never see your child smile on Christmas day.

How would you feel?

How is this at all relevant to the conversation? He's not asking about the parents of the kids, he's asking people that obviously weren't involved. Honestly, I just don't even get the point of your post if there even was one.

In Switzerland and Israel, all adult men are required to carry an assault rifle, however there are barely any shootings there.

This massacre proves to be the last straw in opening the political debate over gun laws but it underlines that there is something fundamentally wrong not in America's gun laws, but it's culture. Other countries have laws promoting all citizens to bear arms, however they do not have the anarchaic citizens which America possesses and people's personalities simply cannot be controlled by law.

It is a cultural thing.

No, it really is mostly just our terrible drug laws and we aren't an island.

Because innocent, defenseless, human beings tragically died. Helpless in the face of a mentally broken monster as their futures were violently destroyed, not to mention deeply scarring their peers for the rest of their lives.

Yes, most news media outlets deserve to be cast in a very negative light for cashing in on this tradgety by calling it a "story", they are very horrible people, but that's no excuse to feel that this is something that is better off thoughtlessly shrugged off.

I'd knock some sense into you, but you're probably already desensitized to that as well.

Genuinely sorry for being blunt.

People died in the newton school shooting, especially children.

If all you're on about is firearm laws and and all that, then you're missing the big picture here.

You're still being irrelevant. MANY children die for many reasons, a lot more than school shootings.

And those news shock us because children died. Such innocence is taken either wrongfully or brutally should at least hit a soft spot in us.

That's why it get's our attention when such events like these go on the news.

No, it isn't shocking at all because children die all the time. This surprised you? It's common knowledge... Of course you can be saddened by innocents losing life because everyone has a natural right to life and should never have that infringed upon.

It never gets our attention when we're the ones killing children in foreign countries.

Oh my god i like totally don't care, massacres are so, like, whatever.

ITT: Posturing and posing for effect.

We get it guys. There are other issues in this world. Yes, children die, and in less developed countries, this sort of thing happens on an even more terrible scale and regularly at that.

But nobody wants to hear how desensitised-by-the world-and-thus-uber-affected-interesting-and-intelligent you are. Your E-peen is also enormous, i'm sure. M'kay?

OT, by starting a thread about this, you are 'paying attention to stuff like the newtonschool shooting', so maybe you should tell us?

This is the only voice of any logical reason I have heard about this tragedy. That is... if you can withstand listening to the 3 inane, narcissistic, ignorant ingrates that are also on this video.

Penn is generally one of the most logical, reasonable, intelligent and sane people in any of these interviews/debates though... no surprise.

It really was. The way they just talked over him whenever he tried to make a salient point, or the way they looked to the audience when trying to make a point using vague 'facts'... f***ing idiots.
