Then why is the firearm crime rate in the only country I know of that constitutonaly allows its citizens to carry weapons the highest in any first world country? If the people are all defended, then why is it so? Why has Australia had no notable gun crimes since reforms after the (mcqarry?) Massacre?
I don't advocate getting rid of all guns, just better tracking, training, storage and checks. Gun ownership in itself is as harmless as car ownership, but crimes involving cars goes up relative to their availability. Guns enable criminals and nutters, where they might kill a person with a knife, they can kill dozens with a gun. Killers will kill, but as in all things, having access to better tools makes your job easier.
Because of drug cartels and a black market and it's very easy to get guns into this country. You're missing a lot of variables, Australia saw a decrease in gun crime but an increase in all other crimes and even homicide, because there were less people to defend against crime. Why is it when D.C. and Chicago struck down strict gun laws they had a drop in murder rates, crime rates, and yes, even GUN CRIME rates. The problem is the person's disturbed mind, not the gun. They could easily chew on a tooth brush for thirty seconds and stab you if they really wanted you dead, the difference now being is you have less of a chance to defend yourself.
