At least I thought my story was semi-interesting...
-.-'
I actually thought your story was interesting, but eyewitness testimony is unreliable at best and isn't evidence for anything.
I thought of a couple things whilst reading it;
-Metal tower that has been heated, and consequently expanded during the day can cause creaking noises when it contracts in the cool night
-High stress situations like being over seas at war mixed with highly strung soldiers are bound to cause reactions. Just watch any tense war film there will almost invariably be the line "I think I saw something".
-People were bored on guard duty at night and coupled with the previous 2 reasons the mind is likely to be playing tricks.
-Towers were made of wood, and it was a clapping sound, like that of a boot walking, and it would be moving.
-We said that at first, but even fresh soldiers, and the unit before and after us reported the same things
-Again, while possible, there were numerous times were this got ruled out, such as when someone was going to relieve someone else and they heard the footsteps themselves, along with the person in the tower.
Although there was only 4-5 people who saw the figure standing when they weren't in the tower, the majority of what everyone saw others who came later said they saw the same things. There was no logical explanation for any of it. At one point we thought that the walking and such may have been caused by people that lived nearby. To test it for -blam!-s and giggles, all those people went to a seperate part of the COP for the night. 2 people still heard the footsteps, and the tower's door slammed open when there was no wind.
You can always say, "maybe the soldier did it for attention" or "he saw it because he got told about it before-hand" but whatever. We seriously went through every concievable explanation and none was able to explain any of it, especially since there was numerous times when someone told someone something, and then someone else told someone about the same type of occurence, and the connection would be made through someone else entirely, without the two witnesses knowing.
The only explanation was that one of the soldiers were coming back every night, walking up to check on the guys in the towers, and then going back to where they were laid to rest. We had a bunch of weird occurences that nobody could explain, and could easily write a book on all of them. Those 2 towers though were the craziest thing I've ever seen/witnessed.
