But do you believe when game developers try to broaden their games to make it more accessible to a wider audience, their games tend to fall short of expectation? We need more games like Dark Souls to be on the market.

Yeah. example: Halo 4

I don't.

The problem lies with so called fans who trash talk about the game on the internet to spread nonsense about it. This is the same thing that happened to Halo Reach.

"The game isn't like the previous ones, so it automatically sucks"

PERFECT EXAMPLE. The Ninja Gaiden series is also another example. I just hope Dark Souls doesn't fall as well.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

If the games are targeted at a larger audience, that is a larger amount of people they have to please, and that can result in a lot more disappointed people.

  • 12.23.2012 9:25 PM PDT

I wanted to become a recognized member of the flood, then I took an arrow in the knee.

Instead of broadening the audience, they should strengthen their current fanbase.

  • 12.23.2012 9:26 PM PDT

BTW Elites rule!

And I am probably just trolling you right now....especially if it is a controversial thread

Yeah. I wish that games would just stick to their specific thing that they do best instead of branching off everywhere.

You're right. Maybe this isn't the best analogy - but I find it similar to trying to make a shirt that fits everyone. It's pointless to try because it will never fit right. It's better to instead make a game that 50 people love rather than a game which 100 people like. That's what was so great about Halo CE; it didn't try to appeal to everyone. If it had, it would have failed.

My thoughts exactly. They stray away from continuing to perfect the core formula that made their games so well.

You see, that isn't profitable. Games that widen their audience are becoming unpopular or the devs aren't satisfied with their current fanbase. So, they attempt to garner a larger one. Unfortunately, this almost always leads to copycating, which is why the industry is stagnating.

I may have to disagree with you. COD has stayed true to their formula for many years and have been improving year by year and look how big their fanbase is becoming, not to mention their profit is ridiculous every year.

But that's exactly what's wrong - it's a vicious cycle. Did Halo CE have a fan base before it was released? No. If Bungie (and now 343i) had stuck to the original concept of Halo I think it would have been much more successful, because although it would have appealed to an older market, it would have sold just as much if not more. The industrialization of Halo has taken away everything people loved about the original game.

Yes. In trying to bring in a wider audience by pandering they usually just repel their fans, and those they're pandering to are rarely attracted to what's been done to bring them in.

I know. It's truly saddening to see it have such an identity crisis all the time. I just wish more gamers would flock to innovative IP's rather then just the same old rehashes

COD has already peaked and is decreasing now, people are starting to realize its a copy/paste every year.

Black Ops 2 hasn't decreased whatsoever.

I personally think Bungie should have told Microsoft to screw themselves when they pushed them for the deadline on Halo 2. Bungie had all the chips on their side, because if it wasn't for them there would be no game whatsoever. Instead they cut a third of the game so it would meet the deadline, dude to poor leadership with a lack of negotiating skills.

  • 12.23.2012 9:42 PM PDT

If Bungie hadn't been rushed to finish Halo 2, the story would have ended there. No Halo 3, then probably no ODST, Reach, 4, or in the future 5, and 6. Without Halo 2's cliffhanger, we wouldn't have had a Halo 3 with Xbox 360 graphics and gameplay. Which would have sucked in my opinion.

What does that have to do with the topic?

The halo universe was too big for it to end at 2...
