I think the definition between casual and hardcore players is quite clear. A hardcore player is out to master the game he plays, whilst a casual is simply playing it to pass the time. That's a different type of casual, though. You're thinking of somone who logs onto Facebook and plays Farmville such as older generations who don't even bother with games that we don't like so they don't even deserve the insult. No matter what when The Flood uses these terms in the way that they do, they're bound to offend someone. We all have different definitions and I find that it brings about a failure in communication. We can't possibly come to a single definition to agree on. I propose we abbandon the terms altogether and specify what it is that we don't like. This would help to avoid any unnecessary confusion.Actually, that wasn't at all what I was thinking. My definition fits all scenarios I can think of, and isn't limited to mere Facebook users willingly their time away with Farmville. For instance, how do you determine if a Halo player is a casual player, or a hardcore player? If the player is striving for constant improvement with his in-game performance then he's out to master the game: he's a hardcore player. On the other hand, if he's only playing because his friends play, or because he finds the mere act fun, he's a casual: he's not out to master the game. I think the different definitions arise when one wants to be incorporated into a group that they don't belong in. If you were a casual and you heard others talking down upon such players it's likely that you'd desire to be a hardcore player.
