Subject: Late Night Flood

deviantART

Hello.

Rain to start the chatter.
Jazz to cool the sensation.
Fire to heat the thoughts.

Good Evening, late night Flood. What sort of delinquent annoyances have you today, or are you sitting solemnly at home, pondering topics and browsing as you regularly portray on a standard basis?

Tonight, I've been thinking mostly about the portrayal of video games today, and the modern influence of its popularity.

Listening to music. I was chatting with a friend on facebook but she went to bed, so now I'm deciding either to play some games or write my sci-fi saga some more.

Tonight I was arguing over the fact that "casual" and "hardcore" are derogatory terms that effect the wrong people because just like how the color white is the color of death in Japan, different people define the terms differently, making possible the offense of someone you didn't mean harm.

The Flood's definition of "Casual" is someone who plays any type of game there is because he enjoys any type of game there is while "hardcore" is the type of person who sticks only to a game that he enjoys.

The casual that plays indie games has the same definitions but with opposite terms. The casual to an indie gamer is someone who plays a game that he enjoys such as indie games because they go back to the roots when games were about fun; a reaction to the over-the-top and unenjoyable games that come out today. Their definition of hardcore is someone who is so drawn into gaming that he/she plays any game there is; The Flood's definition of "casual". See the problem?

Personally I consider myself a casual or... hardcore as The Flood would put it.

Sometimes, I just don't bother with all these definitions. I just play what I want to play, do what I want to do.

Well, I will be getting a -blam!-load of MS points soon, Christmas and all.

Anyone else getting anything good for Christmas?

I think the definition between casual and hardcore players is quite clear. A hardcore player is out to master the game he plays, whilst a casual is simply playing it to pass the time.

1600 MSP and Dead Space 1 and 2.

I am assuming direct control.

I've been reflecting on how everyone desperately tries to justify their actions as right versus being wrong without realizing there is no way to place things in such black and white terms. Hell, people just need to realize as humans we are all selfish -blam!-s willing to kill for what we want. We are animals.

That's respectable even though it seems to go into The Flood's definition of "casual". That's another thing, respect; The Flood has none. Heck, I could type out a post to rival Einstein's intelligence and The Flood would bicker over an unintentional spelling error that I made. Then if there's someone they don't like, they whip out flamethrowers and don't even try to undertstand the opposite side of the arguement. I know that the users here are intelligent but the way they convey their arguements is well... about what you could expect from The Flood.

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

My brother insists on talking in a tobuscus or Yogscast voice, but other than that just browsing the flood.

Strikes me as really pretentious really. Feels like everyone's trying to make themselves feel better by calling themselves hardcore. Then again a lot of gaming communities do this(/v/).

That's a different type of casual, though. You're thinking of somone who logs onto Facebook and plays Farmville such as older generations who don't even bother with games that we don't like so they don't even deserve the insult. No matter what when The Flood uses these terms in the way that they do, they're bound to offend someone. We all have different definitions and I find that it brings about a failure in communication. We can't possibly come to a single definition to agree on. I propose we abbandon the terms altogether and specify what it is that we don't like. This would help to avoid any unnecessary confusion.

Yes, some PC games so I can get into modding. ESIV Oblivion and Halo PC. These are two which I always looked back at and all I could see was awesome. When else can you ride in on an exciting mission in a pelican piloted by another player or run around free roam as Master Cheif and massacre a viallage? It's all about fun and having fun.

Actually, that wasn't at all what I was thinking. My definition fits all scenarios I can think of, and isn't limited to mere Facebook users willingly their time away with Farmville. For instance, how do you determine if a Halo player is a casual player, or a hardcore player? If the player is striving for constant improvement with his in-game performance then he's out to master the game: he's a hardcore player. On the other hand, if he's only playing because his friends play, or because he finds the mere act fun, he's a casual: he's not out to master the game. I think the different definitions arise when one wants to be incorporated into a group that they don't belong in. If you were a casual and you heard others talking down upon such players it's likely that you'd desire to be a hardcore player.
