Subject: Late Night Flood

Actually, that wasn't at all what I was thinking. My definition fits all scenarios I can think of, and isn't limited to mere Facebook users willingly their time away with Farmville. For instance, how do you determine if a Halo player is a casual player, or a hardcore player? If the player is striving for constant improvement with his in-game performance then he's out to master the game: he's a hardcore player. On the other hand, if he's only playing because his friends play, or because he finds the mere act fun, he's a casual: he's not out to master the game. I think the different definitions arise when one wants to be incorporated into a group that they don't belong in. If you were a casual and you heard others talking down upon such players it's likely that you'd desire to be a hardcore player.
Well in that case, no I was a casual even in your terms. I didn't play to prove anything and hated doing so. I enjoyed Reach and never complained about armor lock or the DMR. I forged all kinds of maps and had a blast playing them. But even so I'm not in any sense someone who will play any game out there just because I like having fun. I wouldn't touch Resident Evil 6 with a 12ft pole because it's representative of the action genre that has become the Resident Evil franchise and besides, it's more of a movie and less of a game what with all the cutscenes.

Being a casual doesn't mean you will play any game under the sun, and the same can be said for hardcore players. It's merely a description that defines the relationship between a player and a game. "I'm a hardcore Quake Live player, and a casual chess player." Being hardcore in one game doesn't mean you're hardcore in all games you choose to play, and the same can be said for the term casual.

"There's a very fine line between not listening, and not caring. I'd like to think that I walk that line every day."

I'm just sitting here, while my guitar quietly whimpers.
Serenade me.
