Subject: Flood, Why Do You Think the Shooting in Connecticut Happened?

I am assuming direct control.

It seems like everyone on the Flood just simply loves the idea of a police state. You are so willing to give them your guns for "safety". After that, you'll support drones and surveillance for the sake of "safety" and soon enough we will all be monitored by the thought police.

Good going, guys.

Im in support of tighter gun laws, but I want the ability to own a fully automatic gun if I so choose.
Owning an automatic seems very over the top.

Guns don't kill people, people do.

Why do people always jump on automatic weapons? The shooting was done with a semi-automatic weapon. There have only been 2 crimes with legally acquired automatic weapons in the last 75 years. The weapons he used he stole from his Mother. There's no way to know he would have gone nuts and killed a bunch of kids with her weapons. He was even denied a gun he tried to buy before the shooting.

Just saying it's better he has Semi-Automatic than Fully Automatic

Disturbed kid had easy access to a weapon. I guess he had built in rage, he finally snapped and went to a school to kill kids. Why he targeted them I don't know.

I am a pharmaceutical scientist. I received my Masters degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2010, after working as a Pharmacist for 4 years. I currently work in King of Prussia, PA, and focus on the analytical chemistry of small molecule APIs. My clients include some of the most well known big pharma companies in the world.

There are approximately 52 million gun owners in the United States, owning around 260 million guns.

Every year since 2006, gun-related deaths have been on the decline. The most recent data shows that in 2010 there were 14,159 gun related deaths.

Do the math: 14,159 / 52,000,000 = .00027 * 100% = 0.027%

So nearly 3 out of every 10,000 gun owners in this country are responsible for homicide due to their use of a firearm. That should be proof that the problem isn't guns. The problem lies with the user.

I disagree. As a health professional, I believe that the problem is not that the U.S. is bad at dealing with mental illness, it's that mental illness is very hard to identify in certain individuals who otherwise may lead a fairly normal life.

There is no cookie-cutter protocol that can objectively determine who is mentally ill and who is not. Plus, even if someone is exhibiting odd behavior, it is not human nature to assume that odd behavior will directly correlate to a killing spree.

People just have to stay vigilant. There will never be any way to know who is mentally ill, who is not, and who's more or less likely to go kill someone on a whim. Listen to all the victims and witnesses that knew of the Jared Loughners and the Adam Lanzas, etc. You hear plenty of people said they thought they were dangerous or had mental issues but no one thought that they were going to pick up a gun and go on a rampage. Why isn't the blame on them, instead of placing the blame on the government and labeling their handling of mental illness as a "failed system"?

TL;DR - Anyone who thinks that America sucks at handling mental illness is retarded. Thinking this is just looking for a scapegoat and shifting the blame out of our hands because we're too lazy to take action ourselves.

Why the hell would you EVER need an automatic gun other than to kill multiple people?
